I have an IBM R52, and barely any extra income to buy a new computer. Also, IBM makes it very hard to upgrade their computers anyway, so basically I'll have to buy a completely new system. It pisses me off, because the only reason I have to is that I'm using an Intel 910/915GML graphics chipset, and most games don't work with it. If anyone has any advice, or has some angry computer stories of their own, I'd love to hear from them.

I'm on my second Dell, I've been happy with their computers. My original Dell was still working fine when I ditched it. It was five years old and I needed something faster.

Yeah, I got mine working now. The driver upgrade that I got is what screwed it up, so I went back to the old one. Once I get the cash, I'm ditching this thing and getting an Alienware, or a Dell XPS.

Building your own PC can be profitably,, though you dont' really get a company that can answer your questions if you have any.. and software install can be a pain.... most expensive being Microsoft Office, and Windows XP... true you can get them other ways.. but yeah they can be expensive. And you usually get some warranty on individaul pieces when you buy online... As for sites..

I generally look at www.tigerdirect.com and NewEgg.com

Both are reliable, and Tiger gives pretty decent customer service : )...

If you want to buy a pre-made PC or laptop... i would of recommended looking on the friday after thanksgiving, Black Friday, there gerneally is some really good deals going on...

Dell is good to go wth, due to their garuneteess and customer service.. as for PC quality there is much better quality elsewhere, but for the average user, and people who don't have the measn of fixing potential problems, dell is a good way to go.

I use TigerDirect, too! But I have no $$$, so I guess the computer will have to wait.

I think Dell is a good computer. Though it seems it has a self-destruct option. Let me explain.

The computer I have now and the one I had before are both Dell. The other was less reliable though as it wouldn't start windows sometimes.

Anyway, once I messed up while trying to shut the computer down and clicked on the yellow button instead (the "mettre en veille" option in french, don't know what it's called in english). Well, after having to shut it down by pressing on the power button for 10 seconds, I couldn't make it work again.

THE MOTHERBOARD HAD BROKEN DOWN. It was caused by electricity, apparently.

Something similar happened to my current computer, but fortunately I had to "only" format the harddrive.

I hate that stupid yellow button. Why is it there anyway? Just wait a few minutes and you'll see the screensaver. That button would be useless if it actually worked, so remove it. It's evil. Makes you waste 500$ to buy another computer.

I entered "mettre en veille" on free translation and it spat out "put in watches." I'm guessing there's accents involved?

No, there are no accents. "veille" could mean watching something, but it's almost never used this way (well, it might be in France, I don't know), so the translation sucked.

"Mettre en veille" shuts down the screen and the computer is not turned off. It's like if it's asleep to need less electricity. It's not doing anything except keeping Windows on.

Hope it helps you find how "Mettre en veille" is supposed to translate in english. I'd like to know.

Edit : Actually, I found why it translated "veille" to watch. It means you guard something so it doesn't get stolen, not just watch at it. "put in guard" might have been more appropriate and a bit easier to understand. It has nothing to do with computers, though (unless it's a badass robot).

Edit 2 : Also, after clicking "mettre en veille", the light of the power button starts flashing.

I assume that in English, that would be the Standby button.

Mettre en veille means "to put on watch".

With the verb mettre meaning "to put" and the verb veiller meaning "to take care of, to watch".

Finally, all those years of French class were good for something. They sure won't help me when the Mexicans finally take over.

Hey, my computer got fucked up while I was playing a game and it went into hibernate mode. You can disable the keys that do that.

No, 5th generation Italian-American. My concentration in my major for my Master's Degree is Modern Italian history though, so I've been learning the language that my relatives forgot a century ago.

I'm a 3rd generation Italian American. My great-grandparents would speak in english, unless they were excited, and then they were like Italian Ricky Ricardo. One of the only Italian words I know is "Bosta", meaning "Shut up/Stop that".

It's actually basta, but no biggie.

My parents were born there and most of my family is still there. It's a beautiful country.

I usually translate it as "enough", as in "That's enough!" Abbastanza means enough too though.
