Should we do one? It's simple enough we all pick who we think will win what award and who ever gets the most correct wins. Now what you win can be up for discussion but I would be willing to throw in money.

There are a few categories I care about (mainly anything involving Dark Knight this year), but I just don't have the capacity to care that much. Sorry. v_v

once Dark Knight failed to be nominated for any major award (Aside from Heath Ledger who is ONLY nominated because he died), I completely lost any interest I could possibly have in these meaningless awards.

Guys, The Dark Knight isn't the only good movie this year. Ledger might get the sympathy vote for his death, but I believe the Academy would have at least nominated him even if he hadnt died. Besides I dont think it is THAT amazing although I admit it is very good. Slumdog Millionaire and Revolutionary Road are my favorites of the year. I will also bet, but this is slightly affected how I would like the Oscars to turn out:
BEST PICTURE
Slumdog Millionaire
BEST DIRECTOR
Danny Boyle, Slumdog Millionaire (these 2 categories always go hand in hand)
BEST ACTOR
Mickey Rourke, The Wrestler (fu Sean Penn)
BEST ACTRESS
Kate Winslet, The Reader (She should be nominated for Revolutionary Road here)
BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR
Heath Ledger, The Dark Knight
BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS
Marisa Tomei, The Wrestler
BEST ORIGINAL SCREENPLAY
In Bruges, Martin McDonagh (this movie is aweome)
BEST ADAPTED SCREENPLAY
Slumdog Millionaire, Simon Beaufoy
BEST ANIMATED FEATURE
WALL-E
BEST ANIMATED SHORT
Presto (I've got no clue here)
BEST ART DIRECTION
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
BEST CINEMATOGRAPHY
Slumdog Millionaire (by now you should realise I adore Danny Boyle)
BEST COSTUME DESIGN
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
BEST DOCUMENTARY FEATURE
Man on Wire
BEST DOCUMENTARY SHORT
The Witness - From the Balcony of Room 306 (no idea here either)
BEST EDITING
Slumdog Millionaire (I'm completely honest with these though, I admired each aspect of the film)
BEST FOREIGN LANGUAGE FILM
Waltz with Bashir (Without a doubt, this movie is brilliant)
BEST LIVE ACTION SHORT
New Boy (I'm awful with short films)
BEST MAKEUP
The Dark Knight (TDK or Benjamin Button, I dont really care)
BEST ORIGINAL SCORE
Slumdog Millionaire, A.R Rahman (Rahman is the god of film scores)
BEST ORIGINAL SONG
"O Saya", Slumdog Millionaire
BEST SOUND EDITING
The Dark Knight
BEST SOUND MIXING
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button
BEST VISUAL EFFECTS
The Curious Case of Benjamin Button

How fucking naive are you? How is it possible to recognize Ledger's performance as one of the greatest of the year and completely ignore the rest of the movie? I'm not saying Bale should be nominated for best actor for the film, but it definitely should have been nominated for best picture and director. Although there is no real way to prove it, I am 100% confident that Heath Ledger would never have even been considered for a nomination if he hadn't died.

When you think about it, Dark Knight should've been up for a bunch more awards than it was, and not specifically because of Heath Ledger, but because you can do this with it.
You can take source material that's kind of frowned upon by snotty, uppity types, make it a serious movie, and not only that, make it a mainstream movie (and a damn good one) and pull it off fantastically. Let's not pull punches here, when you compare TDK to something like, say, Tank Girl (not bad, but c;mon, no one expected the academy to recognize that one), you realize Christopher Nolan took the superhero genre and made it grow up, and by grow up I mean not remove it's soul, but make it excellent and TRULY demographic neutral.

Not only is that not right, that's not even wrong. It's a meaningless statement. Saying something is "one molecule away" from plastic is like saying a farm is one letter away from a fart. Water is "one molecule away" from being explosive hydrogen gas. |

I am naive? Just look at the other awards, no TDK for Best Director or Picture. Maybe a few minor awards nominated them, but no wins. Besides, The Reader and movies like that are safer bets when it comes to the Oscars. Sure, Heath Ledger made a great performance, but come on, besides that and its technical aspects, it isnt really that great.

Except it was great. Its a comic book movie thats a genuine meditation on the human condition; a honest to goodness mature movie and not some Niechzian power fantasy or excuse to show off whammo special effects. Its engaging from beginning to end, its just as good the third time you see it as the first, and asks some difficult questions about morality without degrading into some pie in the sky idealism or gray cynicism.
Its also hurts that its competition are a big pile of overrated oscar bait, with the big offender being Benjamin Button; a miserable pile of dreck based on a terrible short story, a truly embarrasing attempt to stretch out a novelty of a premise.

Benjamin Button isnt really that overrated, I'm wondering how it got all those major nods because it has had a mixed response with the critics in overall. But I do agree that the movie's story sucks ass.
The Dark Knight's story might be different to usual comic book adaptations, but the other contenders this year have proved the same potential, too. (with the exception of Button)

Aww. I liked Benjamin Button. It was a little long, and not as good as The Dark Knight, but I liked it pretty damn well.
Though the female I went had multiple orgasms for Brad Pitt.

i liked ben button the movie, better than ben button the short story. the short story was crap as RGS has mentioned several times, but the movie wasnt bad. i do have to agree w/syd though, when he said it was better the first time, when it was called forrest gump.
i also recently saw defiance and that wasnt entirely bad. it was actually a decent movie.
and here is the short story on button in case anyone hasnt read it: http://www.readbookonline.net/read/690/10628/

I am the only one who thinks giving Heath a award nod is futile?
I mean, yeah he did a great job, and yeah, it sucks that he died.
But, Academy Awards are really only useful to people who are still alive. It's nice that they want to honor him and his memory, but do you think he is going to care? No, of course not, he's dead.
I'm rooting for Rourke. The Wrestler was an awesome movie, and Rourke did an amazing job. (Except for the end. I felt there should have been more there.)

Even if that was correct, The Dark Knight still deserved a nomination. Both Titanic and The Return of the King won best picture and while they were good movies, this was mainly due to their huge box office numbers. The Dark Knight's success alone should have secured it a nomination.
I'll post my Oscar picks at a later time. I still need to see some of those movies.

The Return of the King's win is simply explained by the quality of each aspect. I mean there is so many awesome things in the movie you simply wont catch in one view. Titanic's win was in the time when Oscar went with the worst movies. (other example, Shakespeare in Love)

You can't explain the record number of eleven Oscars for The Return of the King and Titanic, including best picture for both, with only the quality of the movies. Especially since The Return of the King got almost twice the number of Oscars the two previous installments won combined. While it was the best movie of the three, it wasn't that much better. Its numerous wins were an acknowledgement of the huge financial success the franchise had as a whole. Titanic won because it was the most successful movie of all time. In both cases box office success played a major part. And so it should have with The Dark Knight.
Acknowledging box office success when it comes to awards is A Good Thing (TM) by the way. It gives the audience a voice and keeps artsy-fartsy Oscar bait from winning all the time. It's too bad that didn't happen this year.

The Return of the King was the worst of the three LotR movies though, so why did that one win the award? The academy is completely full of shit and these awards are worthless anyway. Movies that win these awards are movies that were made with the sole intention of winning awards, not of entertaining people or making money.

Absolutely no offense towards you, Jeebus, but your comment seemed hilarious to me. First you seem to state your opinion as the universal truth and then you talk about made-for-awards movies. To me the latter doesnt even exist. And if something was made purposedly for awards, I would still watch it if it made me interested otherwise.

I still like the Oscars quite a bit but since there are no real movies I cared too much about this year (last year I watched because No Country For Old Men was nominated).
I havn't seen Benjamin Button but I hope it doesn't win, it sounds like one of those movies made specifically for the Hollywood up and ups.

Seconded. This movie didn't really tug at my heartstrings like it seemed to do for everyone else in the audience when I went to see it. It was basically Forrest Gump Lite, and I hated Forrest Gump.

TDK deserved another nomination or two, I was in love on the first viewing, on the second viewing I enjoyed it a lot but some of the cheesiness was more noticeable which I didn't care for but was still very good. I do think that there is more than a ton of bias on the forums however, due to a good portion of the members here having the same likes/dislikes because these forums draw specific people to them, therefore there are fewer differing opinions.
