So it's being marketed pretty heavily with the trailer(s) being shown frequently (at least when I'm watching TV). Anyone going to see this besides me?

I am, actually. It looks pretty good. No real idea what its about (never read the book), but I'm intrigued. Kind of a trippy, Alice in Wonderland-ish story, it seems like. The sort of bad trip where your eyes end up ripped out and replaced by buttons I guess lol. From what little I know, Tim Burton seems like the perfect guy to handle this. I'm looking forward to it.

My parents read the book and liked it so I will probably see it sooner or later. I'm sick of Tim Burton though.

It didn't really register with me until now that the book was written by the same guy who wrote Watchmen (Neil Gaiman). Big fan of his stuff, though I need to track down his Sandman stuff.

Henry Selick is directing (as well as the writer of the screenplay), Burton isn't even involved with this thing. Just check out the full cast and crew ( http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0327597/fullcredits ), but if you look up Selick, you'll see that he's the one who directed James and the Giant Peach, Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas, and Monkeybone among others.

Neil Gaiman has some good stuff, I really enjoyed the Sandman books.

Every preview I've seen says Tim Burton is directing this, and everyone I know who's interested in it mostly wants to see it because he is directing.

This movie looks like it will kick ass. I had no idea that it was a book first, but i will DEFINITELY be buying it now that i know.

Uh, Alan Moore wrote Watchmen buddy...

And they're certainly trying to make it sound like Tim Burton directed; "Look! Stop motion animation all the fat goth girls love! Tim Burton's here, c'mon..."

I read the book and I've seen the ads, I can already tell you most of the movie has nothing to do with the book. Granted, the book was short and they need to pad it out for a movie, but so far the only things they appear to have in common are the cat, the hidden door, the black button-eyed parents and Coraline herself.

I find Neil Gaiman to be a bit overrated personally, Coraline was ok but fairly unoriginal and I've read some of his short story collections, one of which I put down after the first two stories nearly put me to sleep.

I didn't think Burton was a part of Coraline. I know Corpse Bride was his project.

It specifically says "from the director who brought you The Nightmare Before Christmas". Thats a different guy than Tim Burton. He just threw his name on there.

Seems like more claymation gothbait. I hated The Nightmare Before Christmas, and the fact that the movie trumpets that as its main qualification for being good doesn't bode well for me.

Do you guys think Burton is a normal guy or do you think he is a weirdo? He does come up with some fucked up shit. You have to be a little strange to come up with a concept like Edward Scissorhands.

Anyways, all this talk of Nightmare, Coraline, etc makes me want to play the game MediEvil.

I think the best word to describe his writing and direction is 'quirky.' He's a quirky motherfucker. Not necessarily a weirdo, just a person with many fucked up, quirky ideas. Some of his stuff I like a lot, some of it I despise.

I saw this today. It was pretty good. The animation was kind of choppy, but it was definitely worth watching.

I will say it's pretty creepy, but not over the line creepy (and no, the alternate "button-world" isn't the creepiest part.)

I think I'll see it because I just found out that the company who made the movie is local to me.

It was made in Portland, OR, at Laika, Inc, which is a new animation studio built upon the ashes of Will Vinton Studios. (The guy who brought claymation to popularity in the 80s with the California Raisins and such.)

It's owned now by Phil Knight and his son. Phil Knight is the incredibly mega-rich founder of Nike shoes, and his son is an animator who used to work under Vinton.

So, I have to support this film, so I can have a local shot someday of directing my own, without having to move to LA.
