Not sure if anyone can solve this, but I thought since there's plenty of people on here who know their hardware, I'd give it a shot.
I have this small but annoying problem with my mouse where, when I'm trying to type, it will automatically left click every so often, moving the cursor to wherever the pointer happens to be. I don't think its a hijacker, nor am I accidentally clicking it without realizing it. (believe me, I've checked.)
Anyone had problems like this before, or have a clue as to how I might be able to solve it? It's really getting irritating.

Open up your mouse and check the mouse button. Or just get a new mouse.

SoldierHawk,
Could you offer a few more details.
* What OS are you running?
* Is the machine a laptop or desktop?
* Is the mouse built into the keyboard?
Several things can cause this type of trouble.
* Trackpads near high static fields or very humid areas
* Warped components that were either too hot or too cold can bend plastic and cause sensitive triggers to be finicky.
* Dropped components can cause this
* A piece of metal touching the USB connection at the same time as an external mouse.
* A bad mouse driver (very unlikely unless you upgraded your OS.)

Sure, I'm running Windows Vista Home Premium (32), on a laptop. Its not a built-in mouse, and I've used it with no problems before (this just started about a month ago).
I'm curious about humidity though...I've had a humidifier running in my room a bit because I have a cold and its really, really dry here. I wonder if that has something to do with it.

I agree, I would attempt to use another mouse temporarily and see if the problem goes away.
What type of mouse is it? Model, Brand, etc...

God, its so old I don't even know. Which is probably the problem lol. I will try using a new one, since its probably just that this thing is on its last legs.
I do do weekly virus scans, and just finished the one for this week. Comes up clean.

As a computer guy I am going to tell you some of the major fallacies this post has.
Number 1
You dont do a virus scan when their something wrong with your mouse, I have never heard virus that affects the mouse or keyboard or causes them to stop functioning.
Number 2
A Mouse these days is so cheap it isnt even funny, A roller ball mouse is 4 dollars at BigLots new, a Laser Mouse is 10 dollars at Target new. It is so cheap that it would be pointless to spend more than 10 minutes trying to even get your mouse working again.
Number 3
Always buy PS2 mice when possible, USB mice seem to always give problems when you upgrade or what else, but for a laptop you pretty much gotta use a USB mouse

Well, the reason it made sense to me to do a virus/spyware check was on the very, very off chance it was some kind of hijacking program. Its not (the problem stops when I take out my mouse and use the touch pad on my laptop), so yeah. $10 trip to Target it is.
Thanks for the input, guys. Its much appreciated.

Hey, thanks for the recommendation! I'll definitely pick it up. Any particular reason you plug this one over any others? (Just curious.)

Why is it worth it to spend a little more for a great mouse?
Let's say that you use the mouse for an hour per day. If you keep it for a year, the cost per day is $0.03 per day. My guess is that you are the type of person who will keep it for a lot longer. If you keep it for 3 years, that is $0.01 per day.
No matter how cheap you are, or how poor you are, you can afford more than that for something that is used as often as a mouse.
I suggest you get something responsive that you enjoy holding. Go to BestBuy and hold some of their mice. Pick one that you like how it fits in your hand. Think about holding it for a long time and the effects of prolonged usage.
Last year I bought this mouse:
http://www.microsoft.com/hardware/gaming/ProductDetails.aspx?pid=100
It has the ability to adjust its weight and slide. I love it.
Is it overkill for what your use is? Yes. But the point is, I went and looked at different mice to find the right one for me, because I use it ALL the time.

I have a general electric mini usb mouse and it's preatty freakin sweet. What's everybody's infatuation with wireless mice / keyboards? Do you really have a ginormous monitor that covers your entire wall so you can sit at the far end of your tennis court sized living room and still futz around on the computer? I'm tired of all this technophilic knob doodery what's it's going on, get some wires captain space man.

I used to hook my laptop up to my TV and use my remote mouse and keyboard. When I move into a house I'll do it again.

I used a 12% off coupon and then a $5 reward coupon. So I saved a few bucks. But yes, it was an expensive mouse. It was not the most expensive mouse I have ever purchased though.
I bought the Boomslang 2000 when it came out in the late 90's.

so that mouse, which is the one i currently have, is giving me issues.
when i click on a link, desktop icon, icon in warcraft III, etc etc etc, it double clicks instead of single clicking. it doesnt happen all the time, but it happens more often than not. sometimes, i click on something and it wont register the click until several tries later. needless to say, thats very fucking annoying.
i tried switching the batteries out thinking the batteries might be dying. that didnt work. i went to the control panel and changed the settings. that didnt help.
im thinking of uninstalling the drivers and reinstalling, but any other suggestions before i try that?
