Old games play on the Nintendo Wii just fine in 4:3 ratio mode. Unfortunately anyone who owns a new TV will own a screen that is 16:9 in ratio.
For people who have their Wii set to 16:9 mode, all older games will appear stretched and awkward.
There is a simple solution to this problem and it is called pillarboxing. It means, center the image as 4:3 and put two black bars on the side of the image. Yes it wastes a portion of the screen, but images will be clear and crisp instead of blurred and stretched. There should be an option in the Wii settings that says:
Use Pillarboxing for old games: Yes / No
That simple!
Until Nintendo does this, the burden falls onto the end user to change the aspect ratio of their display every time they want to switch between old games and new games. This is crap considering that it is an easy thing that the Wii can do automatically.

Eh, I could go either way. It's not how the game looks on the TV, it's how you play them that counts.
Hell, I play SNES and Sega Genesis on a flat screen TV.

I do too, but I have them both set to inputs at the receiver that makes them go 4:3.

I agree that it is annoying, but it doesn't really affect the game play so I just deal with it. I mean even in proper aspect ratio, older games look worse on a new tv because they relied on scanlines of older tvs to smooth the edges. With new tv's you get the big pixels in their full, unfiltered glory.

I just change the "WIDE" setting on my TV with my remote control. Fixed.

Fuck you people and your flatscreen TVs.
Do you get pissed when you go to watch your Simpsons DVDs and you have to change your TV's aspect ration because animators in the 1990s didn't have the foresight to predict the 16:9 ratio when they drew the show in 4:3? No, you don't. You fucking man up and change your TV's display setting.

QFT. You literally have to push one button on your fucking remote once to to swtich to 4:3 ratio. Quit your bitching.

#1 This is an easy thing to fix in the Wii OS. VERY easy. Fuck them for making me have to press "A" button.
#2 Fuck you if you think it is only one button. My TV requires that I go into the video menu and then the aspect ratio section. Then I have the option of 5 settings.
#3 Haddox, ask your owner to clean your fishbowl, I think you are seeing things distorted from all the shit on your round window.

Hmm. There's pillarboxing for the GBA when you play Game Boy games on it, strange that they didn't think to include it on the Wii.

Yeah...I just wish the DS Lite could play old gameboy games like the GBA could.

Yeah, that's the only downside to the Nintendo DS. Otherwise, it's a flawless system.

That and the system is too small.

Video output to a TV would be priceless.

Video output for a DS would be stupid. Any game that requires you to use the stylus wouldn't benefit from video output, because you have to look at the DS screen so you can see what you're doing. And besides, no handheld has video output. Why would they start now, especially when people bought the Super Game Boy and the Game Boy Advance Player?

I'm with Haddox on this one. Same deal with letterboxed (not anamorphic) DVDs. It's not a big deal to hit the format button a couple of times.

Why?
Because I would be willing to pay for it. Extra for it. I would pay an extra $100 bucks to be able to connect my DS to my Wii and view it on the big screen.
I enjoy the TV more than the mini screens. I am even ok with having to look down when required. Its ok. Just split the screen on the TV and I'll be happy.

Actually, I was just thinking about the Nintendo DS series in general. I actually have the bulky gray one.

That's not completely correct.
PSP 2000 (Slim) and later models has built in TV output. (Just buy the TV out cable) So, does the GP2X.
