Here's the story. I've been living with my parents for the last couple years in hopes of saving some cash while I went to school and tried to save up some money at work. Well, one thing came to another, and I'm not in school anymore and my job has been having its hours cut like crazy.

And now I'm in between a bit of a rock and a hard place.

The house had a bit of a meltdown today. I don't get along great with my stepdad sometimes, and today he flipped the hell out. My mom, me, and him all got in a huge screaming match all because I got pissed over what I wanted for lunch (yeah, seriously). It somehow turned into him demanding I take my Xbox downstairs. I refused because the big screen down there isn't HD and I can't get a good Live signal. For Christmas, I got an HDMI cable and a MS Network Adapter. So this demand canceled out everything I received for Christmas. Basically, my mom took my side and now there's talk of me having to get an apartment. I guess this was my last straw, of all things to fight over.

So my question is:

For those who live on their own, how do you save a lot of money? I'm having some serious financial doubts here and I don't know how I'm going to survive paying rent, cable, possibly water, utilities, etc. My mom may be supplying me with some of the rent money each month.

What do you look for when searching for an apartment aside from a good price?

How do you afford it all if you only work a part-time job such as myself? I don't know if my work will allow me to take another job because of the differentiating hours I work.

P.S. I cannot survive without Internet and TV.

Ouch Sad . Drew, that sucks. I've never been in that situation, honestly--my parents divorced when I was a kid, and my mom and I get along quite well despite the occasional, inevitable row.

I'll be honest here though...at least where I live (admittedly one of the most expensive cities in the nation, San Diego), it is literally impossible for me to live on my own, in spite of the fact that I have a part-time job, scholarships to take care of grad school, and a (reservist) military paycheck. And no matter where you live, I don't think living on your own on a part-time salary is realistic, unless your family plans to help you out, A LOT. I've been wrong before, but from my experience its just not.

Are you sure they're really serious about sending you out, though? I've been in fights where mom has threatened to kick me out, but after a few days things have chilled and gone back to normal. Could this be a situation like that? Because if its not, I think your family is going to find itself either giving you a shitload of money to pay rent, utilities and bills, or they're going to force you to live on the street lol (which I DON'T imagine they would do, by the way, unless they're truly coldhearted bastards--and it dosen't sound like they are.)

Best of luck to you, man. It's rotten to be caught in the middle like that. Hang in there, though--these things tend to work themselves out okay in my experience. Here's hoping its the same here.

Part time, you have to have roomates. The more the better when you don't make a lot of cash. dividing the bills between 2-3 people makes a huge difference.

I save a lot of grocery money each month by going over to my parents' for dinner about five times a week. Also, since I don't have time to clean, I save maid money when my mother is nice enough to come over & clean my house. All the benefits of being an only child, I suppose.

Poker helps me get a lot of extra cash too.

Like SH said though, it would be difficult to keep an apt with only a PT job. The only way you could do it is if you parents pay half of your rent and bills for you.

Edit:

Burt is right, moving in with a bunch of friends to split the bills is the perfect idea.

Well, SoldierHawk, I'm 21, so it's definitely not out of the question. I've put my parents through a lot of shit in my life, and my step dad is one of those people who just holds grudges his whole life, and doesn't say what he means ever, until it all comes out in a fight. He's an ignorant douchebag honestly.

I don't know if they'd force me to move out, but I feel the need to. It's mainly for my mom, I don't want to put her through any more stress and sadness than I already have. And fuck my step dad, I just don't want to see him often. heh

Yeah, I'm definitely going to be asking around to friends and stuff to see if any one wants a roommate because that truly is my only option. Housing around here, in the city I live in, is very affordable however. The neighbor girl lives down the road a bit and rents out above a bar with everything included, spacious 2 bedroom apartment, 3 rooms, etc. for only 400/mo. She splits it with one person.

Ah, I feel your pain with the stepdad issue. I don't have a stepfather, but my real dad was enough of an ignorant douchebag to last me the rest of my life. I so, SO understand wanting to get the fuck out of there.

I'm really glad to hear the city you live in is affordable--that changes things a lot. What the rest of the guys said is true too; getting roomates and splitting bills is totally the way to go. Since things are pretty low where you live, I'd personally advise getting an apartment or house that at least allows you to have your own room. No amount of cash saving is worth giving up having at least a small bit of personal space with a door.

I'm not entirely sure what your school/work situation is, but if you aren't in school, and the boss at your job is decent, you might be able to have some flexibility either getting a second job, or more hours with your current one. If you are in school that makes things a little trickier, but certainly not impossible. If your mom does indeed help you with rent, and you can find a decent roommate or two, it sounds like you could set yourself up pretty nicely. Smile

DO NOT UNDER ANY CIRCUMSTANCES recruit your buddies as room mates, it will destroy your friendship.

Learn to cook, fast food / frozen crap will eat all your spare money up fast.

Read your lease agreement with a magnifying glass before signing it.

Create a budget and consult it before EVER spending money on crap you do not need, keep in mind the need for a safety net after all bills are paid, the more the better but at least have 100 or so bucks to fall back on in case of hard times.

Practice the phrase THIS IS MY HOUSE BITCH IF YOU DON'T LIKE IT THEN KICK ROCKS MOTHERFUCKER.

Kick all your no good friends out and enjoy being a hermit.

A good tip is not to buy your lunch at work. Always bring from home. You will save a ton of money that way.

Ditto. One of the main reasons I live alone.

Blackout is right about having a budget. It makes sure you're not spending more than you're taking in.

Ice's lunch comment is great too, I try to bring my lunch to work as often as possible, especially ever since Cook County upped the sales tax to 10.25% - the highest in the country. Frickin' Chicago.

Holy COW! That's weak!

Anyways, I appreciate all the tips so far guys (oh, and girls Smile ).

I'm a healthy eater so the fast food and buying lunch at work issues are already resolved. I pack my own lunch every time. I will definitely have my own room. That is a must obviously.

The biggest issue is my income. Between paying for insurance, rent, my drug testing, probation stuff, etc etc. I just simply won't have enough, especially to create any sort of safety net. I've always relied on my parents to pay my way through my problems, and they always have. Plus, I've never really liked cell phones, so I'll need one of those again too. That's another hefty bill.

I just don't see how this is going to work without my mom seriously hooking me up.

drewbocop,

How much can you make a week?

Is it stable each week?

Did you graduate with a higher education? If so, what degree?

What kind of skills do you have?

For example, are you good at fixing stuff or math or something like that?

The trick to surviving without parents is making good financial decisions on a regular basis. Drinking out at bars and restaurants is very expensive, so avoid it. Video games are expensive, try to replay some of the ones you already own.

Bills in order of importance:
1. Rent
2. Electricity
3. Heat (Gas, oil, or electric)
4. Water
5. Food
6. Media Bundle - Most of the time you can get phone, internet, and cable on a single bill for about $100 but without any perks.

This is a good topic.... I have nothing to add because I have a hard time budgeting my money at times... Oh wait, roommates. All I have to say is make sure your roommates are responsible, otherwise prepare to be a hard-ass douchebag.

well, roommates do help.

if you dont want a roomy, then get a studio. especially if you have very little furniture. then slowly but surely move on up to a one bedroom apt. and most complexes (at least in arizona) will cover your utilities except for phone or power. or both. and some offer cable for free.

second, get a full time job, or get a second part time job. should be easy if you are not going to school anymore.

third, cut out all unnecessary expenditures (i.e. internet.... i know you need it, but for now sacrifice until you can afford it. same with cable. you can go to the library for internet or just hijack a wifi signal in your complex if you can)

fourth, learn to love walmart and the dollar store. dont buy brand name stuff, buy the cheap knockoffs. for example, buy the pharmacy brand instead of head & shoulders.

and like GP said, just replay all your old games for now. until you can afford new ones.

If your state has the Mega Millions, play it. Eventually, you'll probably win.

I've been playing the Mega Millions for about 8 years... I can still remember when it was called The Big Game. So far I haven't won so much as a dollar, but I'm pretty sure I'm due to hit the jackpot pretty soon. I know everybody says that, but I've been extra good the last 12 months and I pray to Jesus every night to let me hit the jackpot so I can do His work. And also, that's all I asked Santa Claus for last year, to hit the Mega Millions jackpot, so I have a good feeling that Syd is about to become a big money player. When that happens, I'll hook you up with an apartment.

I will say that while having roommates isn't all bad, I will never...never...have them again.

It's fun for a while, and yeah, you should do it. But eventually, it gets old.

Working as a dishwasher, trying to make my way through college has made me an expert on money-saving. Don't listen to the people who say to just get a bunch of boxes of microwave meals at Wal-Mart or something. They're nasty, unhealthy, and unfilling. Instead, grab a local newspaper, and clip out coupons for fresh fruit, vegetables, eggs, etc. (best to learn how to make basic meals in the kitchen as well, it's not very hard). Then, get a member card for every grocery store you go to (should be free in most places). You can easily get a huge haul of healthy, filling meals for under $100 if you use coupons and store-brand foods.

Best thing to remember how to shop is to figure out how to stretch out food. For example, instead of buying two dozen eggs for about $10, and blowing through them quickly by eating three or four eggs every morning, I buy a dozen eggs, a pepper, and an onion with coupons for about $5 total. You can then only use one or two eggs by stretching it out with things to mix in each day. This way, i cut my breakfast prices in half buying filling, good-tasting instead of eating fattening, expensive cereal or toaster stuff. For lunches, you can make sandwiches with a pesto-mayo mix, which will keep you from having to buy expensive jars of mayo by making you use half as much. These are two small examples of getting mileage out of your food.

I'll try to post more stuff about energy and bills later on. Time for dinner, now.[/i]

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.

I'm holding you to this. I swear.

GP, I work at Meijer, part time. I also applied at the bowling alley I mentioned in the bowling thread, but so far that's a no-go. I would love to move up to full-time at Meijer, but I fear doing that because I do plan on getting back in school and eventually transferring. This is another issue. I don't want to make any huge commitments until I'm POSITIVE on what I'm doing with my life. It's just really messy right now. I appreciate all of your input, and have already learned a lot more about my situation. Thanks!

another thing, quit drinking and smoking. and dont have a transference of addiction and start eating sweets.

if you are gonna drink, drink at home and do it cheaply. in other words, 30-pack of milwaukee's best and/or 40's.

what exactly is meijer? if its like most companies, they can usually work with your schedule, unless you decide to go to school full time. what that means, is that you can go full time for this semester since it might be too late for you to register and come the fall semester, you can reassess your position and then decide whether to go to school, or just wait it out some more.

First off, I will never stop smoking. And I drink only maybe once or twice a month, and I really enjoy good ol' union-made Pabst Blue Ribbon, which is highly affordable. So that's good.

Meijer is exactly like Walmart. It was actually around first. Lately, my hours have been cut to almost nothing. But when spring/summer comes I work around 38 hours a week. They will work around my school schedule, but that also means I won't be making very much, and thus could afford even less. If I work all the time (if they let me), then I won't wrap up my goddamn Associate's and be able to transfer out to Central Michigan. That is my ultimate goal.

I think it's honestly too early to think about all this. At least until I get back in school, I don't think I'll be getting my own place. It's then that I'll figure out how I'm going to pull it all off financially.

I just wanted some tips on how to save when I move out.

I agree with a lot of this stuff. I lived on my own for about 2 years. Now, not so much, unless dorm rooms count.

Spend less, spend only when you have to. Buy for the long term or as far as you can think you'll need for what money you have allotted for the month. YES, this includes cheap beer like Milwalkee's Best Wink It's pretty much all I buy now. When I can I'll buy myself some good liquor, but it's not one of your main spending things.

Budget well. Being forced back to being barely broke will do that automatically, but KNOW how much you need per month, how much you have, how much you need, and so on, to keep making it month to month.

Try to find a place that has some utilities in the cost of rent. Where I was at before Water was already covered, which made one less bills to pay.

Find an apartment that has heat/electricity/whatnot included if you can, usually they give a really good deal compared to what bills would be on top of rent. My first few months on my own I smoked only buy 1/get 1s or the cheapest possible... Spending 4.50 a pack rather than 7.50 for what I wanted was always good... Always look for sales, I lived on 1 dollar canned soups, bought buy 1/get 2 packs of hot dogs, and plenty of bulk buy ramen.

And above all else, have absolutely nothing to do with women, biggest wallet drain possible. I went from having 100$ extra a week to always having to decide what bill gets paid late this month...

As for internet, you can always hope your neighbor has an unsecured wi-fi connection, or at the very least hasn't changed the default passwords on their modem.
