I'm not sure what the average age is on the forums, but I figure at least a few of you are old enough to be afflicted.
I first noticed receding in the corners of my hairline when I was 24. I got really freaked out at first, thinking I was too young to be balding, but then I started taking notice of other guy's hairlines and realized I was far from alone.
I'm 28 now, and while it has gotten a little worse, it's still not too bad yet. I can still wear a "normal" haircut and not have it look bad, although I try to get it cut regularly since it tends to look worse the longer my hair gets. I'm actually one of the lucky ones, though......I think I notice it more than anyone else does. And should the day come where it really looks bad, I'm fortunate that I can rock a bald head pretty well.
I personally refuse to use treatments such as Propecia or Rogaine. From what I've heard, the side-effects to Propecia (Finasteride) are more prevalent than they'd lead us to believe. Plus, I don't want to mess with my hormones. Rogaine would just be a pain in the ass to me......having to put it in my hair twice a day. And they say if you stop using it, you'll lose all your hair really fast.
Here's to hoping for the cure, and hoping that the cure can REVERSE baldness as well as prevent it. Anyone else?

I hate you for reminding me of the curse that follows my ancestors.
At 28, I have a slight receding hairline.
My father is bald.
My mother's father is bald.
My father's father is bald.
My mother's father's father is bald.
My father's brother is bald.
My father's father's father is bald.
My mother's mother's father is bald.
My father's mother's father is bald.
I am fucked.
Here is what I know. The better you eat, the more hair you will retain. Once you start receding, your hair is still alive for about 7 years. In that time, if you are healthy enough to fight off the DHT, you can grow your hair again.
DHT might not be something you want to fight off. It is a hormone and fucking with it might make you less manly.
So hair loss might be a consequence of having a functional penis.
God I hate you for making this post.

Haha, sorry to ruin your weekend. But yea, that looks like a rough family history you have there. Mine is somewhat checkered......my dad is as bald as could be, but both of my grandfathers kept their hair. My uncles are a mixed bag. So I could probably go either way.
I've also heard that diet plays a roll. I try to be serious about taking my vitamins. I also take zinc and iron supplements, as I've heard these can help. I'm in good shape too, so hopefully that will count for something.

I'm 17 so I'm not all that familiar with baldness, so this may seem like a stupid question. If I can no longer grow hair on my head, will that also affect facial hair? I don't think being bald would bother me if I could still grow a beard or goatee.

It depends where your body produces DHT. Usually it is in a common pattern across the head. Facial hair isn't normally affected.

One of my friends, whose 27 right now, has been receding for years. Most of the hair from the top front of his head is gone. The guy my eldest cousin married started balding in his mid-twenties too, but it has seemed to slow down a bit now (he's currently in his mid thirties). He had a major complex over it at first, but he's come to terms with it now.
It can happen that young, and it certainly does suck.

I'm only 24 myself, and I have a receding hairline. It happened to my father around this age, too, along with his brother and his father. Like GPF, I'm genetically screwed. My father actually kept his college ID card from his junior year because it was already visible at that point...
But, it doesn't really bother me too much. If it were a bald spot in the back of my head, then I'd be more likely to think it looks ridiculous. Having my hairline recede doesn't look as bad as that.

At 21, I still have a full head of hair, no recession. But--
My whole dad's side of the family is bald as bald can be. Dale Gribble look-alikes.
My whole mom's side of the family had and does have really thick, full heads of hair. My grandpa is 81, still cuts hair at his self-owned barbershop, and has a great head of hair.
What side do the genetics usually take? (Please say mom, please says mom...)

The urban legend is that you take after your mother's father, but I've read things lately stating that there's no evidence to back that up.

That actually is holding true for me so far, thank God. I have incredibly thick hair just like my maternal grandfather, and he's finally just starting to go bald now, and he's over 80 yrs. old. Meanwhile, my Dad has been going bald for years. My paternal grandfather didn't lose too much hair before he died, either.

Sucks to be you guys. If there's one thing my family tree has going for it, it's definately the hair department. My dad, brothers, uncles, grandfathers, and I all have a full head of thick hair. Not a single one of us is bald or going bald. I've broken combs in half just trying to get them through my hair. On the flip side, we are all grey by 30. I'm 23 and I already see some grey. That's not such a bad thing though since it is easier to dye your hair than regrow it. Besides, grey is in these days, just look at George Clooney.

Well, no baldness in my family. My hair is super thick, but we all fail at beard growing ability.

My dad and one of my brothers are both going bald. My hair grows at an incredibly rapid rate, but I HATE they way it grows; the hair on the back of my head grows much, much, MUCH faster than the hair anywhere else on my head, so if I don't get my hair cut a certain way, I grow a natural mullet, which I really don't like (imagine that). Also, I don't grow facial hair; not because I can't, but because the hair on my scalp is light brown while my facial hair is almost jet black. *sigh*

My granddad on my mom's side was bald, which doesn't look too good for me. I figure if it does happen, I'll just shave my head, Scott Ian style. My hair starts out straight, then gets curly as it grows, so I can't have long hair in the usual sense, just thick hair. It's a pain, so I wouldn't mind shaving it in place of going bald.
Also, mandatory Rush lyric for the situation:
"I looked in the mirror today
My eyes just didn't seem so bright
I've lost a few more hairs
I think I'm going bald "
Or, just use anything off Anal Cunt's "Howard is Bald" EP:
http://www.darklyrics.com/lyrics/analcunt/howardisbald.html#1
Take your pick.
