So many of my favorites have already been mentioned...Pryor, Gaffigan, Hedberg, Kinison....but no one has mentioned my very favorite yet, and that's Greg Proops. You might know him if you're a fan of "Whose Line Is it Anyway," (great show btw, if you watch the old British version and not the wannabe, Drew Carey hosted American version), but his stand up is even better than his improv. He's quite a bit like Pryor in that he's very quick on his feet, had a very sharp, sometimes caustic wit, and is very, very good at making extremely true (sometimes painfully so) and funny observations. Worth checking out if you're a stand up fan, imho.

I'm probably the fiftieth person here to mention Bill Hicks, George Carlin, and Mitch Hedberg. I also like Denis Leary (Hicks ripoff accusations notwithstanding) and Doug Stanhope. Eddie Izzard is pretty brilliant, too.

On the opposite end of the spectrum, I can't fucking STAND Carlos Mencia. If I could telepathically stab him in the genitals with the fury of a thousand icepicks through my television, I would.

I liked Mencia's standup at first, and the first few episodes of his show, then I quickly learned that all of his jokes are the same, and consist of him saying "dededee" repeatedly.

Comedy Central used to show one of Proops stand-up specials, and it was pretty good. I seem to recall him talking about how much different America would be if it had be founded by Italians instead of uptight British outcasts.

Did anyone mention Jim Norton or Greg Giraldo? Not on the top of my list, but both pretty funny, and I don't think anyone has mentioned them.

Also don't think Nick Swardson has been mentioned. He's good, but his voice can get on your nerves after a while.

I just used some form of the word mention 3.. er 4 times.

Giraldo is underrated from what I have seen, he is quite funny.

I love Norm Macdonald, I know I said standups, which he is, but I think his interviews are funnier than his standup especially his comments on Conan O'Brien when some girl was on to promote Chairman of the Board. Classic.

Heh, I remember that. In fact, I just did a quick google search and found the transcript:

Quote:
We work too hard. Can we agree on that? (hardly any applause) Not a groundswell of support for that, but all right. (goofy voice) "No, we work just hard enough, Greg." Harder than everyone else, right? 40 hours a week, two weeks vacation a year. All the other countries in the world, in the *G-7*, they get four weeks. (goofy voice) "I did not know that." Well now you do. The Japanese, they might work harder than us, right? Die in front of their televisions of coronary thrombosis when they're like four. Been singing the corporate anthem since they were a zygote. We work *so* hard, man, and for very low. I don't know if you've ever been to like Spain or Italy, but it doesn't break down that way. In Italy, one o'clock rolls around, work *stops*. Everyone goes to bed, they get up, they drink wine, they get up in the morning and they look *fabulous*. How did we miss out on that?! How come we got the grubby boat of bandy-legged Puritans? How come we didn't get the Italian party boat with the cappuccino maker and the gelato machine? That was the sexy boat, man. Those guys have a million saints, we'd have a holiday every other day! We'd *never* work! (sexy Italian voice) "One o'clock now, I go to bed! Then I get up, I drink wine, I make love, I get up in the morning, I have strong coffee, I look very sexy in my suit. Beep-beep-beep, get out of my way, I do not use brakes on my sports car, beep-beep-beep. La dolce vita, Bambina!"

Can you tell that it's a slow day for me at work?

I agree with all of this. Stand up is not Norm's best medium, though he is still funny as a stand up comedian, but his interviews and weekend update material is really funny. Fun fact also: Norm MacDonald was a writer for the Rosanne show.

Classic! Although my personal favorite has got to be: "So often this country iis...y'know...kind of redneck, dickhead, peckerwood, bo-hunk, hee-haw, gun-toating, anti-choice, homophobic, psycho-Christian, gimmie-cap-wearing, militia armband sporting, big belt buckle with your name on it that you wear upside down so you can look at it an go, 'oh shit that's my NAME' ....kind of place..."

Love that one. (And yes, that was all from memory.) Thanks for the nice reminder...its been years since I've seen that special. Wish they'd put it on DVD or something.

Anyone heard of Louis CK? Not my fave but he's got his moments.

I've always wondered what his family thinks of the jokes he tells about his wife and kids. Confused

Seconded. Mitch Hedberg was the fucking man, plain and simple. Any comedian that mentions Obituary is cool with me.

My apartment is infested with koala bears. It's the cutest infestation ever. Way better than cockroaches. When I turn on the light, a bunch of koala bears scatter, but I don't want them too. I'm like, "Hey... Hold on fellows... Let me hold one of you, and feed you a leaf." Koala bears are so cute, why do they have to be so far away from me. We need to ship a few over, so I can hold one, and pat it on its head.

Before I'd heard Mitch, it was Lewis Black, who I actually saw live for my 16th birthday. I also really dig Ron White.
I'd also just like to mention my hatred for Dane Cook and Carlos Mencia.

Sorry for the bump but I've had Carlin on the brain and am waiting for the All my Stuff Boxset to arrive. I'm looking for Comedians with similar work, anything thing with macabre humor politics anything like that, who do you recommend? Already know about Hicks and Lewis Black, anyone else I should check out? Confused

Dennis Miller somehow reminds me of Carlin. Perhaps it is all the political humor - and he isn't nearly as funny - but they are similar. Also, Dick Gregory.

Delirious is definitely the funniest stand up I've ever seen. Dave Chappelle is up there too though.

Lately I have been a big fan of Gerry Dee, a Canadian guy who has a segment on The Score. I'm sure nobody has heard of him except for maybe anorexorcist, being the Canadian hockey fan that he is.

I noticed your from Nova Scotia, did you go and see him when he was in Halifax?

Anyway, he was fucking hilarious and I was surprised because his humor was a lot different then what he shows on The Score. I think he's coming again in May, which I'm definitely going to again.
