I probably should have waited three months til it was $30, but I bought it anyway.
As a lazy fighting game player, I enjoy it. There are like 8 million fighting game franchises out there, and I can't be bothered to learn and memorize combos for each one. As a mindless mashfest, it's quite fun. |
I justify myself buying it just for the Alex Ross inset and the Tobias comic book. While maybe not the best money-to-content deal ever, I'm glad as hell to have both. When the inevitable poster size version of Ross' picture goes up for sale, I'll be buying that too.
As a lazier fighting game player, I can't be bothered to learn and memorize the names of a bunch of crazy fighters. MK's and DC's rosters I already knew by heart.

I'm not sure how fun it would be on a keyboard, but if you had one of those USB controllers there's a thread on, that could be fun. I envy your console embargo. That'd make my life easier.

The wired 360 controller uses USB and is Windows-ready.

Yeah, the usb controller is a necessity. I have a Logitech one currently. When I buy a new computer in a month or two I'll probably get the 360 controller.

Am I the only one who finds this universe-merge really jarring? The very idea that it might be possible to see Sub Zero tear Superman's spine out is ludicris, sick-n-wrong, and ...just kind of lame...
How can I explain why it seems weird to me...i think it'd be like turning on Seasame Street & seeing the little puppet-thing from Saw talking to Elmo. Or having Spiderman appear in the next Hostel movie. I donno, it seems like it just really clashes..

Make no mistake, MK vs. DC is a DC game first, MK second.
Kind of like " Battletoads & Double Dragon"?

See, I wrote a whole topic, then deleted it seeing this one, but let me further explain:
I totally agree graphics and violence aren't important for a great fighting game. the SF's will always be my favorite games, and they neither have spectacular graphics or excessive violence. My point is, they are using the unreal engine, and aside from the load screens, the stages look sloppy and unsophisticated. It's not like they are bad, it just gives me the impression that they didn't put full effort into it.
As far as the gore goes. Absolutely correct. Gameplay is much more important, but the gameplay fails, and we are talking about a franchise that helped to spawn the game rating system. You can deny it till death, but the truth is that MK made a name for itself off ultraviolence. Played mk1 lately? some of the clunkiest most awful controls ever. I don't know, I guess in my eyes MK2 was near perfect, so it's a tall order to ask for something to top it. |
well this is why I never liked MK. it was a terrible game that only got attention because of the violence.

Actually, it's not.
Welcome to Superman 101.
It is the radiation from Earth's yellow sun that gives the alien Superman his super powers. His body is essentially a giant solar cell, and when he is deprived of that radiation, he begins to weaken. Thus the merging of Earthrealm and Outworld weakens Superman's powers and makes him killable.

Turns out I was correct in my assumption that this game would be mediocre. I'll probably pick it up when it goes down to around twenty bucks.

and the reason people dont recognize clark kent as superman, is because his glasses are made of some sort of compound from krypton which actually hypnotizes people, so they dont recognize him.
or something

not really, considering pa kent gave him the glasses.
it's more that the glasses aren't the only thing. the way he carries himself makes you never think twice about it. it's a psychological thing. superman is a stoic, strong individual, wheras clark kent is a quiet, subservient man who slouches, and is often viewed as weak.
it's kinda like how guys like batman and the punisher ahve a giant symbol on their chest to draw people to aim there where the armor is instead of their unprotected heads. psychologically you'd snap to shoot at a giant white skull or bat emblem if it was there.

I never had high expectations. By my count, the number of excellent MK games is exactly 2, and they both came out before I had finished fifth grade.
And yet those two games were powerful enough that I've at least given a shit about every mediocre crap-a-thon that the franchise has come out with for the past 15 years.

The only MK games that ever really disappointed me were MK3 (missing most of the best characters), MK Gold (glitchfest), and MKA (a major step backward from MKDA and MKD).

1. Characters were cut down from three fighting styles to two. This was primarily down to eliminate repeats, but it was still dumb.
2. Individual fatalities were replaced with Dial-A-Fatality bullshit.
3. Most of the character models were recycled.

I can agree with Syd, those three MK games were the only real disappointing ones for me as well. I did like the "Create-A-Kombatant" in MKA though. Mythologies was frustrating and Special Forces was a pile of crap, but those weren't even real MK fighting games.

I bought this game as well. I really enjoy it aside from the lame Fatalities/ Heroic Brutalities. I find the controls to be very responsive and the combat very smooth.

Now that I think about it, I would have loved to have seen Johnny Cage in this game. Also, another thing, I havent doen any myself yet however I saw some of the fatalities and for a MK series game, there pretty weak.

Ed Boon said in that there would be a bunch of DLC for MKvDCU, and that Kung Lao and Doomsday might debut as DLC. If that happens, Johnny Cage might not be far behind.
Unfortunately, Midway is in seriously financial trouble now, so that might not happen.

They were planing on including Doomsday? You could have reenacted the final battle between him and sup which ended with superman dying.

I think there should be more fighting games on PC. Think about it, there are so many keys to use, and that's great for combos. and maybe for a fatality, you'd have to spell out Spine-Rip or Heart-Pull.

On a tangent, the only fighter coming out for the PC in the foreseeable year is SF4.

You are more than correct. I hear very bad things coming from Midway. While Mortal Kombat WILL continue, the company is making major cutbacks. If Wheelman also under performs, it could be catastrophic in the long run. DLC is expendable and you really should just consider it cut right now -- if it does happen, be glad and surprised.
