When did the name change of Princess Toadstool to Princess Peach occur? Was there a reason for the change? And was the umbrella incorporated in Mario 2 simply to accomodate the character ability in Doki Doki Panic?

I really didn't recall the change until Mario 64. She very noticeably ends the later she sends Mario with simply "Peach".

In Japan, she was always called "Peach". In the United States, we used to call her "Toadstool", but we started calling her "Peach" in a Super Scope game called Yoshi's Safari. We called her Peach since.

And though it wasn't an umbrella in Mario 2, I know you're talking about her, um, dress flotation. According to tmk.net, "The long-jumping sister, Lina, was changed to Princess Toadstool."
So yes.

I prefer Toadstool because that was her name when I fist played the Mario games.

I agree, its way more classic for me. I hated seeing "Peach" when I first played M64. Now I have just gotten used to it I suppose...

Peach, unlike Eggman, is an acceptable name to me. I also like the way it sounds better than Toadstool.
So Peach it is.

Same here, if I am rescuing a princess I want her to have a princessey royal kind of name name and not some dumb name like Peach.
Princess Toadstool of The Mushroom Kingdom
Princess Peach of The Mushroom Kingdom
The first one sounds more royal to me.

I agree with reeper. Maybe her name is Peach Toadstool?
It really doesn't matter to me. I think of her as Princess Peach solely because Peaches are more sexual than toadstools.

Toadstools are masculine, peaches are feminine.

The character does originate from japan, where surnames come first so maybe it's
Princess Toadstool Peach or Hime Toadstool Peach if you want to get technical.

Oh right, it was the dress that gave her the ability in mario 2. I've been playing super paper mario lately and she uses an umbrella to do the float thing, thats where i got the umbrella from.

She also had the umbrella in Super Princess Peach called Perry as in parasol.
