So I bought this movie today and watched it. I've been anticipating the movie since it was announced, seeing how Resident Evil is my favorite game series. I didn't have high expectations for the movie to be honest, I was actually dreading it. When I finally saw footage of it, my hopes hit rock bottom. So today when I popped it in, I was looking at it more like a chore than fan service. So what did I think of it after seeing it? Well, I was very surprised, I thought it was phenomenal.
I was seriously impressed at how well the movie was done. It goes so well with the series, it very much felt like Resident Evil. It even has a great set up to Resident Evil 5 in regards to the state of the world and the Tricell company. I was especially happy that in order to get the most out of the movie, you have to be someone who follows the games pretty closely. I was afraid the movie would be nothing but pointless, unrealistic action and crappy one-liners but instead they focus mostly on the story. It's a great balance and the movie doesn't feel like it's rushing through itself to get show more action. It also doesn't feel like the people who made the movie were trying to show off like Advent Children which was nothing more than CGI masterbation. In all actuality, the CGI isn't even that great in this movie and looks pretty dated. When I saw the first glimpse of the movie, I immediately noticed it looked like crap. But while watching the movie, it doesn't even matter and you realize the visuals weren't the main concern of the movie and overall, the movie as a whole has a better quality for it. It's actually refreshing that for something like this, the visuals take a back seat. The voice acting isn't perfect either but I really think that was a deliberate decision to add to the feeling. The voices are on par with the games.
This is by far the best video game movie I've ever seen and I really feel like it was made for the fans rather than the masses. For me, this undoes those shit fest RE movies that came before. This has a place in the series, it flows so well, and lays some groundwork for RE5. The movie hasn't faired to well with most major reviewers so far which is probably a good sign. Fuck "professional" reviewers, they probably don't play all the games anyway. I could never have imagined that they would have done such a great job with this movie. Thank you God.
I'm very curious to hear your guys opinions. While I hope you share my sentiments, I am curious to hear your views on it, hopefully from someone who is really into the series.

yeah, I saw this 2 nights ago. Never played an RE game besides 4 and was completely confused, but I still sort of got it. I enjoyed it, if for no other reason than Leon being the most Kickass badass who ever kicked ass.

As a big fan of the series since 98 and RE2 being my favorite game of all time I have to say this was a loveletter to the hardcore fans similiar to Umbrella Chronicles, and while having its flaws it brought back alot of positive nostalgia as I remembered playing RE2 and I enjoyed this alot better than the live action movies for sure despite some of the questionable dubbing.

Didn't the flashbacks to RE2 really make you hope they do a remake? Supposedly they are after RE5.

Yeah a RE2 remake is needed for sure, definately for a next gen console,im willing to wait
I have mixed feelings about RE5 though, I love Chris Redfield's character but I get the vibe its like Far Cry 2 done in RE4 style.

Did anyone else subconsciously think a few times during the movie they would have to be picking up a controller? Seriously. When the camera pans out and the zombies were pouring out of the plane, I was SO ready to pick up a controller.

I thought it was mediocre at best. The voice acting was pretty hilarious, with twenty-something Leon sounding like the Goddamn Batman (yeah I know he's in the games too), and a native Chicagoan doing an outrageously phony British accent.
And somewhere in there, much like the second live-action Resident Evil movie, they forgot they were making a zombie movie and decided that lots of scenes of people talking would be more exciting.

I consider myself an extreme hardcore fan so I will explain it to you from that point of view. It will take a while like any nerd rant.
All the HC fans of the Resident Evil series were happy initially that the series recieved the attention from Hollywood in that we got a live action Resident Evil movie to bring our girlfriends to. The thought of having Mila kicking zombie ass was a great idea because many RE fans loved the Fifth Element and we were willing to compromise cannon integrity at first to make the RE series more "mainstream".
The first RE movie was alright. I personally didn't care for it but it was cool seeing my favorite series get a nod from the general public. I know you can't copy a video game story and expect it to do well for a commerical film and appeal to mainstream audience's, which is why I was willing to forgive the annoying Michelle Rodriguez character who fits in the Fast and the Furious universe but not the RE universe. Mila wasn't annoying however and did a good job of Alice.
They ended up ruining the character of Jill Valentine in Apocalpyse then having the stupid choice of Ali Lartner as the choice of Claire Redfield. I like Ali on Heroes but she isn't a good Clair Redfield, neither is Sienna Guillory who was the worst choice for Jill Valentine ever and ruined the character storming into the police station putting a bullet through the zombie head her first scene ever. It just ruined the character of Jill Valentine forever, which some damage was undone by Umbrella Chronicles.
Overall the true fans of the series love this movie. We basically are getting a Resident Evil game that we can't play but thats fine.It managed to incorporate all feelings, emotions from all the cannon RE games and that was good enough for me as a fan who had been disenfranchised by all the gun survivor, outbreak and Anderson shit I had to endure as a fan to the series.
RE has a certain charm to it with the bad dubbing and questionable acting which doesnt matter to thetrue fan who played the first, second and third one on the PSOne,the fans who played Code Veronica on the Dreamcast and the fans who played the remakes and RE4 on the Gamecube.

I know a lot of people complained about the new female character being 'weak' but given that most male gamers idea of a strong female character is either a total dyke man hater or a soulless void with huge tits, most of them were immediately dismissed comments.

She fit the mold of a Rebecca Chambers who was more mild than someone like Claire of Ada but still capable of holding her own. Thats how I like to look at it

ill give the opinion of someone who isn't a hardcore fan of Resident Evil but I feel gave a great counter argument

But in all honesty, minus the backtracking, document-reading and puzzle-solving, we got moderately-faithful adaptions of the games in these movies. People have to realize that, even with an A-List writer, director or producer, the games never had a chance of spawning the next uber-epic LotR, Spiderman, or Dark Knight. The games aren't a deep social commentary, they're not about "survival horror" (one of the greatest marketing scams of all time), they're cheesy B-movie incarnations with hot women blowing *beep* up and a sliver of plot-hole-ridden-backstory to string it all together. |

resident evil isn't supposed to be about the zombies. they're just a small part of a bigger picture.

I think that guys 'counter argument' is rather silly. He's obviously never played the games, and his survival horror being a 'scam' is also pretty dumb (http://dreamdawn.com/sh would disagree with your thoughts on survival horror.)
The Resident Evil games do have a manner of a B-movie plot, but that's something of the whole point. Zombies aren't the main focus of the series like they are in movies like the dead series. Like FNJ said, the creatures in Resident Evil are a small part of a much larger picture!
Plus, hot women blowing things up? What? Most of the Resident Evil chicks, despite /me/ thinking they're incredibly hot, are pale and somewhat sickly, usually in very restricting outfits complete with dark circles under their eyes and a kind of emotionally stifled/traumatized personality.

I fnally managed to see this (a physical copy). The first thing that got my attention was how many sequels to shitty horror movies were being pumped out. I mean Boogeyman 3?! I didn't even know they'd made one sequel to it, let alone the prospect of two. Vacancy was crap. And I have as much a Grudge for The Grudge 3 as I do for the next Fast and the Furious movie.
Crap horror sequelfest rant aside, I liked the movie a lot.
One minor beef I have is that if the G-Virus is supposed to mutate things like crazy, why is it that Curtis wound up looking so similar to William Birkin's initial metamorphosis from RE 2? I would've preferred something different, while still retaining a humanoid physiology. The final form was fine, I couldn't imagine them making another "maw" like Birkin eventually becomes.
I also instantly recognized the sequence where Leon and Claire meet up again as a nod to how it happenned at the beginning of RE 2 (RE 2 was my first and favorite of the old school RE games).
