At some point, most gamers entertain thoughts of creating their own game - molding their dreams into the game they’ve been waiting for, but never came. Some fall prey to misleading television ads for game-design college, others abandon the idea once they realize that game programming is no casual hobby. The few that make it to the industry work in groups, contributing to the birth of a new game as a team. And then there’s Bob.
In 2003, Bob started to teach himself the C programming language to make his own game for the Gameboy Advance, and then for the Nintendo DS when it was released in 2004. Earlier this year, he showed Bob’s Game to the world - a self proclaimed “commercial quality” adventure game for the NDS, and he hopes to make history by being the first single programmer to release a game of this size on the retail market - but he’s hit a wall. Bob needs a NDS Software Development Kit, and Nintendo has stopped responding to his email - so he’s locking himself in his office without Internet, TV, or human contact in a move protest until they contact him.
Bob plans to keep up the sit-in protest for 100 days or more, and has very limited access to the outside world. “Food is delivered once a week by a friend. I have no Internet access, television, or game consoles besides those I am developing on. I can receive and send email on my Android G1, so I can get Nintendo’s reply and update my site with tether.” Bob’s been holed up in his office since the 10th, when he first announced the shut in. “The agreement on the application states I will receive a decision in 6-8 weeks. It has been 18 weeks! I fulfill all the requirements- I’m a financially stable registered company with a FEIN working from a commercial address. When Nintendo decides to approve my developer license application I will end my protest.”
While he waits, Bob is working 16 hour days to port Bob’s Game to the iPhone and Android platforms, ensuring that the game will eventually see release regardless of Nintendo’s response. Bob expressed his frustration in a short history update on December 28th.

On November 17th of 2007, well over a YEAR ago, I contacted Mr. Tom Prata, Senior Director of Project Development at Nintendo of America.
I explained to him that I had worked for several years on a console game for DS, and that I wanted to purchase the NITRO SDK in order to finish the title.
Mr. Prata responded, and we emailed back and forth about 50 times discussing the title and the NITRO requirements.
After doing a background check in December, we teleconferenced to discuss the game. He wanted to see it. This culminated in a meeting, scheduled for February 22, 2008, at the Game Developers Conference…
…At the meeting, Mr. Prata barely even bothered to look at the game he had stalled me for months to see.
He advised me to apply for a developer license, and assured me that he would “do what he could” to make sure my application was fast-tracked. |

I would definately buy that if only just to support an independent developer who has put that much time and effort into it. It also looks pretty good and he seems extremely enthusiastic about what he's doing. We gotta help Bob out somehow!

LOL,
I hope that Nintendo denies him the right to publish on their platform.
The result will be an insanely large story and his game being published to other platforms where he will make money.
I have no doubt that Bob will make money either way. There is a lot of potential here for good stuff to happen.

Looks pretty good, very impressive for one person. I dunno about there being no battle system or combat whatsoever though....

This game looks pretty boring. You have to give the guy some credit for doing all this himself, but now he's just coming off as a whiny prick that wants attention.

Collision detection and 2D Physics look good, but no combat? What the fuck is the point?

It's an Adventure Game, not an Action Adventure game stupid. Grim Fandango had no combat, but was it not fun for not having combat? No, it was fucking awesome, and this game is a 2D Rendition of what an "ACTUAL" Adventure game should be.

Agreed about not needing combat. This reminds me more of the classic adventure games, that Lucas Arts and such made. (Loom, Indy, Monkey Island, Grim Fandango, etc.) None of them had traditional combat, but they were all awesome games.
Is this really what our youth is becoming?

Well, I hate to say it, but M3GA has a point there.
I'm pretty interested in it and want to try it. Hopefully Nintendo doesn't act complete fools and he ends up releasing it on platforms I'll never be able to play it on.
Even then, I'm sure the publishers on his side will give him a hand.

Damn, M3ga got some spunk in him.
I agree that a traditional combat system isn't necessary for it to be good..

M3GA continues to get better as he posts. You can see the improvement, and the sooner people realize that the sooner we start expanding our forum.

With all the shit Nintendo lets people release on the DS and Wii, they might as well let this guy release his game.
But if he has no contact with the outside world, how will he know if Nintendo caves?

6 was my personal fave, it was pretty wacky. I was playing it over again a while back and kept skipping the dialog for Alexander pulls out his magic map.
My room mate came into the room and asked what kind of gay game I was playing because he kept hearing Alexander pulls out his dialog skip Alexander feels a strange pulling sensation.

I would play the shit out of this game. Probably. Graphics look kind of Earthbound'ish. It's still pretty early to be casting out bottom-line judgments like those idiot youtube commenters.

Seems Bobby's gone a bit off the deep end now:
Recently, Pelloni started to update his website with paranoid theories: conspiracy, sabotage, nefarious plots designed by Nintendo to silence Bob’s Game. Earlier this week Pelloni made vague threats that he would release Bob’s Game into the homebrew community if Nintendo didn’t issue him the SDK he needed to finish the game for licensed publication.
When the protest started, Pelloni seemed set on creating a licensed DS game, even praising Nintendo as a great gaming company, but as of Tueday 1/6/09, Robert Pelloni declared war. Now he aims to destroy Nintendo!
If it sounds crazy, its because it is - 25 days in solitary confinement would put anyone on edge, but it’s hard to imagine how Pelloni’s new attitude could do anything but hurt his case. In his most recent update, he writes:
| Bob wrote: |
I am the GREATEST GAME DEVELOPER THAT EVER LIVED.
I am a GENIUS, and I will be around for the next 40 years- eating away at your company until it exists no longer.
I will find way after way to slowly destroy your bottom line, and your business will fail.
The name NINTENDO will be forgotten, a discarded husk like so many others.
“bob’s game” will live on FOREVER. |
It’s only a snippet of a harshly worded rant directly insulting the likes of Shigeru Miyamoto, Hideo Koijima, and even Doom creator John Carmack. Pelloni paints himself as a god among game developers and accuses Nintendo of cowering in fear and humiliation. These strong words harshly contrast an update he made only a week earlier:
| Bob wrote: |
I like Nintendo.
The last thing I want to do is release my game in a way that might damage them.
Why do you think I spent five years making a “Nintendo game?” |

Oh man.. did I really write that?!
That's not like me! I can't even remember.
My head hurts...
73 more days. I can do it. I'm fine. I'll be fine.
I need that SDK! Please, Nintendo! I'm begging you! |
In any case, they're both at fault here.
Bob for locking himself in like that, and Nintendo for being stupid and not giving him the damn SDK.
But his posts at selectbutton's forums say it's all to get the internets riled up so more people take notice.

While on one hand I could see it that way, I feel that he really has gone into a state of delirium after being a solitary recluse for the last month.
