I'd like to nominate the entirety of Capcom vs. SNK: Millenium Fight 2000

To unlock alternate colors for each character, you need to beat the game with each character
To unlock the EX mode for each Capcom characters, beat the game with them in Capcom groove
To unlock the EX mode for each SNK character, beat the game with them in SNK groove
To unlock Morrigan as a CPU opponent, unlock all Capcom EX characters
To unlock Nakoruru as a CPU opponent, unlock all SNK EX characters
To unlock Morrigan and Nakoruru as playable characters, buy all Capcom and SNK characters respectively.

You see, not only do you need to unlock stuff, then you need to fucking buy. Basic EX characters run from 2000-4000 points each depending on tier, while EX Ryu and EX Iori cost 7000 each. You get between 300-500 points for each run through of arcade mode, and Training Mode maxes out at 999 points, so you can't farm points.

Then Morrigan and Nakoruru cost like a shitload of points too. What the fuck? Why am I playing this game? This is fucking gay. Fuck you, Capcom. Fuck you, SNK.

I like the character select screen, the stages, the music, and the lifebars better in CVS1.

I liked the whole feel of hte game better than the gameshow announcer and news coverage deal.

DOA games are annoying, wiht beating the game to unlock a costume. each character has like a million costumes.

some characters aren't playable in story mode, meaning you have to beat time attack mode to unlock an outfit.

Unlocking everything from Melee was impossible. Getting the CDs in God Hand is torture. But the worst would be the Dot Hack games. No less than 4 games to slog through, pure pain due to being a not very good game that was certainly not capable of lasting for even a sequel. But the hard part is the vast amount of things you need to do, combined with the fact that its not hard to miss one thing and not know about it until the 4th game, when you've already sunk countless hours into the bugger. It gets better; the game is glitched, so doing things right when it comes to the e-mail quest can actually fuck you over forever. Your prize; backgrounds. Backgrounds and tracks from a game with weak music. Gay.

Also, getting a medal on all the levels in Starfox 64 was quite the hellish task.

Levels like Sector Z were especially brutal as Falco and Katt would always blow up at least one of the missiles now matter how quick you were. Unless you personally destroy each one, you won't have enough kills to medal)

Yeah, I beat the game countless times to unlock all characters, stages and alt colors. Your reward for doing so is the ability to choose the same character up to three times.. pretty cool, unless your fighting against 3 Cables/Sentinols.

It's all so reviewers can say "Good replayability".

That's all game companies care about anymore. Is it replayable? And does it have multiplayer? Those are the priorities of gaming in 2008, nevermind whether or not the game is actually any good.

I was wondering why Capcom SNK 2 EO was significantly cheaper than the first one for DC. I picked up copies for both Xbox and GC for under ten dollars together, and my local arcade has the game. I like it. Its not too bad.

The GC version of CvS2 is only good if no one picks the GC-ism. Otherwise, it becomes a race to see who can spam Tiger Shot the fastest.

If you're going to a points system, it needs to be accessible.

Look at the 3D MK games and Soul Calibur 1+2 for examples as to how to do buyable unlockables properly. There needs to be an in-depth 1 player mode that's worth playing and it needs to give you a decent amount of points. If completing the single player mode doesn't give you at least 70% of the points needed to unlock everything, the game is an asshole and it's making you invest way more time than you should have to. Secondly, if you're going to award points for training mode, you should allow people to farm it. If most unlockables cost at least 2000 points, training mode shouldn't max out at 999 points. Not everyone wants to spend a month unlocking shit.

I haven't played it for a while, but i think Sonic Mega Collection + has some ridiculous criteria to unlock some things, like play Sonic 1 200 times to unlock Eggman's nude pose art. Something like that. I haven't played it in forever so who knows.

Syd, you're one of the few ppl on here that got Castlevania: Judgment and you didn't think to mention it?

Beating Story Mode with each character TWICE and Castle mode (30 something Edge master mode-style challenge) with every character to fill out the Gallery and get all the accessories.

In Guilty Gear X2 you had to go through Survival Mode in order to unlock Robo-Ky, Kliff, Justice, and Gold Costumes. It took quite a while, plus you had a decent chance of losing before getting everything even if you were good at the game, as well as a very good chance of losing to Gold Johnny, f*** him.

Ever notice how the Sound Test is almost always the last thing you unlock in any game? Yeah, that kind of annoys me.

You could unlock everything through time release though. I left the game in training mode to unlock everything cuz yeah, Survival Mode was a bitch.

I enjoy Castle Mode, but yeah the Story Mode thing is fucking tedious. Also, as far as I can tell, you don't need to complete every challenge in Castle Mode, you just need to beat the bosses and make it to the end.

Most tedious unlockables are so tedious they aren't even worth getting. Even if it's some invinciblity mode, its like "who cares?" You've clearly beaten the difficult requirement, so you don't need such aids to play the game.

I think all unlockables at such a high difficulty should be 3d girl sprites having lesbian sex with each other. Kinda like the computer games that porn stars come out with.

There are a lot of what if's in life Donny. What if I hit you really hard in the face, knocked yo shit to the back of yo skull? What if I....had you girl gargle my nuts? The fact remains, you are a fuckin mutant.

In Final Fantasy X, one of the items to unlock two abilities of Lulu's ultimate weapon require you to dodge 200 consecutive (!) lightning blasts in the Thunder Plains. Yeah, fuck that, you're not going to make me attempt that.

No one's mentioned Dead Rising yet?

To unlock the laser sword, you have to play Infinity Mode for (I believe) seven hours straight. You can't just leave it sitting, oh no, because in Infinity Mode, you're poisoned and constantly on the search for food. And the piece of crap isn't even worth it; it's basically a katana with longer range, and it's REALLY easy to accidently kill survivors when you're swinging it around.
