My friend lent me Marvel Ultimate Alliance. When I tried playing it, the screen would go black after a selected New Game ---> Easy/Normal. Then it would get stuck on a black screen, and the console would make these horribly whirring noises. When I took the disc out I noticed a scratch running around the middle in a perfect circle. WTF Xbox?!

Circular scratches pretty much ruin the disc.

i was just playing MUA before. I like it alot. it'll only run you eleven bucks at gamestop.
did you try moving the x box while the game was in it? thats teh only time that can happen. if not, the circle might have already been there, and the whirring noise was teh x box trying to read it. that would explain teh black screen.

yup. basically what FNJ said. if you have the xbox on its side and then trying laying it down, then it'll destroy the disc.

I didn't move it, and I tried putting it on it's side. Bothing worked. I suppose the scratch could've been on already (I was borrowing it). My firend said he only played it three times and didn't care. What a douche, I wanted to play it real bad!

speaking of 360 problems my controller is whacked out.
The wireless does not work at all no matter how many times I try to sync it up with the console. No big dealer because I think wireless controllers are trendy bullshit anyway.
So I plug it in to the charge cord and plug the cord into the usb slot. The lights confirm that the battery is fully charged so I have no idea why the wireless is kaput.
So when playing I have to hold the controller high up to my chest. Why you ask? because if I let my arms drop and the controller ends up around my stomach area the screen informs me that the controller disconnected and asks me to re connect it. Now I like to play video games sitting on the floor, and if I'm not holding the controller at chest height like the 360 wants me to my arms are under the coffee table I sit next to.
So I'm thinking that the table is blocking the reception of the wireless.....EXCEPT THAT I'VE GOT THE GOD DAMNED PIECE OF SHIT PLUGGED IN!!!
ANY ideas wtf is wrong with my controller?

Just buy a used one from Gamestop and take your broken one back in its place and demand a store credit or something.

I'm becoming more and more afraid of buying an xbox with the mountain of issues it seems to have for almost everyone. If you're lucky to avoid a seemingly inevitable RROD, you get scratched up games and shoddy controllers.
I'm one of those weird people that wants their $300 console to last longer than 9 months. You'd think by 2008, manufacturers would have figured out how to make them sturdier.

ten years ago If I told everyone that the NES controller hurt your hands and that you'd have to press teh reset button repeatedly to play the games you'd still eat it up like a bucketful of dicks.

This is true.
As far as the 360 goes, I got mine with the next shipment after the first release. It still works great. I've had no problems. As many hours as I logged playing Oblivion, I'm sort of shocked that it hasn't died of natural causes yet. Now that I said that, it probaly won't work next time I try and play it. It better not fuck up now because I have Fable II and Saint's Row 2 under the tree at mom and dad's.

obviously it's bugtacular because it was a PS2 game that was rushed and ported to every other game system under the moon, but I still enjoy it immensely. I can't wait till the sequel.

I bought the absolute cheapest model of the 360 that you can get today, and I have no troubles. I've left it on for a week straight, my drunk friend tripped over the play and charge cord and knocked it on the floor (only scratching my soul calibur 4 disc), I've spilled wine on the controller, I've thrown the controller across my house, I've left the GHIII guitar on top of a radiator, and aside from cosmetic damage, the shit all still works perfectly. the only thing that's ever caused a problem that I couldn't easily fix or get fixed for free or cheap was when my drunk friend threw my old one down the stairs.
It's just easier for people to find a small problem to bitch about, and magnify the hell out of it.

Here's another WTX XBOX moment for me.
A year or so back I bought Oblivion for the PC, slapped an extra gig of ram a dvd drive and the best Nvidea graphics card I could afford into my craptastic dell 2400. It shouldn't have worked but it did play.....for about a half hour and then blue screen of death. some sort of buffer overflow problem, my computer has been retarded ever since I let my step dad flash the bios to get past the bios password we forgot, so I gave up on playing it on the PC.
A few days ago I decided to buy the GOTY version of Oblivion since I wanted to check out the Shivering Ilses expansion. After character creation and the boring tutorial through the sewers I stepped out into the game expecting the impressive (yeah my comp is shit but I could play the game on medium settings and it looked pretty good to me) visuals I got on the PC.
ok wtf LAME crappy draw distance, all the plants and grass and rocks and shit just pop into existence, the landscape in the distance is just hills with low res skins over them, looks like a slightly less angular version of Zelda 64. Sure it looks great with the grass swaying in the wind right next to me, but when I look across the river and see a big fat bald ugly green hill and the trees pop into existence once i get within 20 feet of them it just kills the mood for me. Urgh it's just ugly and stupid looking.
I'm just disappointed really.

I've never had a problem with it. I always thought it looked fine. But I've never played in on PC. I wish I would have got it on PC instead because of all of the badass mods you can get. But now that you've brought up the flaws, I'll probably notice them. If I play it again that is. I haven't played it in about 2 years now since I did pretty much everything there is to do except one thing with that ogre bitch who wants to be a knight. We were supposed to fight these guys, but when I got there, one was already there killed and the others never show up. That and I've never played the SI expansion. I had already done everything and got burned out by the time it came out. I didn't want to pay the money for it.

yeah it really looks crappy compared to PC. It's playable but it was a let down the first time I stepped out of the sewer.

if you've sunk that much time into it it's not really worth starting over just for the prettier graphics, gameplay > graphics...

They are indeed cool, but I've had problems with alot of them, any thing with new textures / armor / items tends to screw up the regular textures and meshes, I mihgt have loaded them wrong but they sure messed up my game. Imperial Guards missing breastplates etc...
