I can't dragon punch. I'll pull it off occasionally, usually by accident, but I can't consistently do it.

That is because it is the worlds most fucking stupid button combination of all time.
While that may be exaggerated slightly... it is fucking stupid.

not really. I can't think of a better motion for anti air attacks.
I find a lot of time the trick is in timing. I know this will sound kinda silly, but depending on what game you're playing, try ending the motion earlier than you think you ahve to. I remember having to do this a lot in battle arena toshinden.
it also helps to mash the fireball motion repeatedly and slam on the punch button while doing something else that wont make you spaz all over, like while getting up or while jumping in with another attack.

Wow. Just wow.
It's easy as hell for me, even on a keyboard.
Then again, I used to know no super moves for a very long time.

I used to never be able to use anything that required the dragon punch movement, but now I just need a joystick/arcade stick to be able to use them reliably, I suck using d-pads.

Guys don't mock Syd or he'll make one of the SNES challenges that you have to do this move constantly through every fight with perfect victories.

It's the most practical combination for a dragon punch. It's not that hard once you get used to it, but it's absolutely perfect for air counters. It requires quick thinking. Your opponent is jumping toward you, do you have enough time to pull of the counter? Are you sure enough of yourself to pull it off? or are you going to sit back and block, or maybe roundhouse? I mean, what do you propose the combination be, foward + punch or something super easy where people could spam the shit out of it more than people do already?

Pick a character that doesn't use it, like Guile, or a character that already has a dominating anti-air like Q's standing Strong.
I can't perform exotic combos very effectively, but I've started genuinely applying myself. Until then, I use grapplers, simple combo strikers, and such.

The more they use the same move, the easier an opponent they become. It's like people who would jump and kick all the time in Mortal Kombat, or do that F,F,P combo with Cinder in Killer Instinct.

Heh, the only thing I'm worse at is down-up move ups.
I'm actually fairly passable as Ken even with my poor DP skills.

Yeah, at least in the SF application, the dragon punch is relatively low damage for as a counter attack. It does its real damage when your opponent is close and on the ground, IE combo applications. You can get similar results by substituting it with a fireball. Actually, a fireball is usually the safer route because sometimes the combo will push you back far enough to not fully connect on the dragon punch leaving you in the air and vulnerable to a counter.

What happened to 2D, anyway? It seems everything just became 3D because it was the cool thing to do, and not necessarily because it looked better.
I miss traditionally animated movies and sprites.

That's good practice actually. I used to do it on opponents throwing weak ones over and over again until they tried to hit me and got hit.
For Guile-like characters, he's the guy you should learn if you want to play all charge characters well(and Blanka as a #2). Work out his Flash Kick timing and you can pretty much set the pace of the match.

For me, I've always had trouble pulling off 360s/720s. Hence why i'm not a big fan of most command grapplers.

One of the many reasons I preferred Mortal Kombat - the moves were always easier to pull off (except the finishers with the up button in them).
Ending a controller pad movement on a diagonal always messed me up.

lordsathien I am with you. I can do the 360 or 720 moves, but not consistently, and not with way too much timing, more then available when fighting a decent opponent, human or computer.

360/720 moves are only plausible with an arcade stick.

I can perform 360's consistently on the PS2 controller, 720's are reserved for when people stand next to me when I wake up, or right out of a jump on SFIII where you can parry. I still can't do 360's consistently on the keyboard, which is why I stick to KoF on ROMs. But yeah the arcade cabinet style is the best way to play 2D fighters, especially ones with 6 buttons.
I curious how the 360 controller uses. Its D-pad seems a bit more fluid.

The 360 d-pad is notorious for sucking.
I suck at complete circle movements myself, even on my PS1 controller.
