Nintendo is again extending the range of the Nintendo DS with a deal that will see HarperCollins eBook cartridges released for that system later this month.

"The 100 Classic Book Collection ranges from Shakespeare and Dickens to Jane Austen and the Brontë sisters. It will cost about £20 and will be available initially only in Britain. Readers will turn the pages by brushing a finger across the screen. If the collection is a success, Nintendo may expand the range of books available."

The new cartridge is yet another example of the eBook phenomenon, which had been advanced in the past by Amazon’s Kindle eBook reader and the Sony Reader. The Kindle is on back order at Amazon, which bodes well for its popularity in 2009, but it does not boast the install base of the Nintendo DS. Nor does either device have a comparable price point with the DS.

I always thought that the design of the DS served as ideal for an application such as this.

I agree, and it's definitely something I'll pick up I think.

Although, there is something visceral and inherently "intelligent" in reading an actual, dusty, hardcover version of Count Of Monte Cristo, so I'm not sure if reading a book on a white digital screen will be the same..

The screen is too small for extensive reading.

Thumbs down from me.

But I'll show my vote by not buying any books for it.

I just don't get E Books. I'd much rather hunt and peck through a gigantic used bookstore looking for one particular tome and end up leaving with a box full of books at the end of the day.

e-book. Electronic Book.

Usually in PDF format. Everything from User's Manuals to books on How To Levitate become ebooks. BIG seller online due to nothing to ship and the product is digital.

I'dhave a DS for games. Ebooks equal work to me.

These will sell very well, but I'm not interested. I want my books in either physical book form (screen is too small to read and for extended periods of time, especially since it's illuminated), or audio book.

Same here. I hate using electronics enough as it is. I read books so I don't end up staring at a bright screen half the day.

I'd rather read a regular book, not an LCD screen with the text in eyebleed-o-vision.

Yeah really I get paid to stare at a computer screen all day and spend alot of my spare time staring at the TV playing Video Games or watching movies, books are my sanctuary from electronica. Besides, do E-Books have that wonderful book smell? DO THEY?! didn't think so. Rolling Eyes

I've used an r4 to read comic books on the ds and it works fine but books are one thing and comic books are another. I couldn't imagine reading some great epic book on a ds, or for that matter a kindle.

I would think comic books would be harder to read on a DS than normal books.

Yeah, I agree. Garfield comic strips? Maybe. Venom and Vengeance Issue #2? Probably not as easy to read.

I'm not getting onboard with this eBook thing until they release Larry Flynt's Hustler Barely Legal Mega Collection Plus.

I think this is pretty retarded. People buy a DS to play games not read books, and last I checked, books are still portable. There has been a trend with the DS trying to make it into something more than a gaming system. It started around when Brain Age came out, most recently that commercial for Personal Cooking Trainer with those dumb bitches having a "bonding" moment in the kitchen with the DS. Why are there more commercials for these novelty games than actual games for the DS on TV? It's pretty annoying.
