Midway is one of the oldest surviving American video game companies, if not the oldest, and the last true American gaming studio. Oh sure, Atari and Activision are still around, but only in name; the companies that originally used those names tanked long ago.

And now it looks like Midway may be facing its death knell: http://www.indianagazette.com/articles/2008/12/09/features/entertainment-media-t/10007273.txt

Sumner Redstone sold his stake in the company, and if the debtors come calling, the company is fucked. I've got a soft spot in my heart for Midway. A lot of their games are mediocre, but they're also damn fun. If they tank, I just might cry.

Most likely though, they'll either merge with someone else, or go bankrupt and some other company will buy their IPs. If that happens, I hope it's Nintendo, so that Mortal Kombat vs. Mario Universe can finally be a reality. I suppose I'd settle for Mortal Kombat vs. Sega Universe though.

Ruined... or MADE BETTER!?

"Ima Wario, Ima gonna finish you!"

You know you want to see Mario and Sub-Zero trade diametrically opposed projectiles.

Their definitely icons just for Mortal Kombat. If it must end a good company needs to pick them up. Nintendo would be ok. Capcom could do a lot too.

Even Better I would love Bowser spitting Fire at Sub Zero, or a Fight between Kitanna and the Hammer Brothers.

Did you ever play NBA JAM 2000 on n64?? I have never said I wanted a new NBA JAM since...

Although A fresh, and healthy rebirth of the series could be good if done pseudo-2D and pumped with plenty of arcade style action.[/img]

Those were all done by Acclaim, who fucking ruined the name forever. The real sequels to NBA Jam were NBA Hangtime, NBA Showtime, NBA Hoops (DC) and the NBA Ballers games of today.

Like I said when this was posted on my other forum some weeks ago, I hope this company gets saved... I love MK too much too let it die with the company.

And no, I wouldn't like to see any company take their IPs, especially Capcom or Nintendo (not a chance). They'll ruin it and make it lose all it's charm, or turn it into a SF-style game. I'd rather see an SNK Playmore type thing where Ed Boon (or someone else) form their own company, and take back the name and the IPs that matter, such as MK, Gauntlet, etc.

I looked through the stuff they made, and to be quite honest there is nothing there that I would go out of my way to save. All of their recent stuff has been garbage, and their older stuff I couldn't care less about. Except for Mortal Kombat. When I was but a small child I was quite the obnoxious little hipster. I loved street fighter II, world heroes, and samurai showdown, and to my perspective Mortal Kombat was the game pushing all of these games out, plus it was really popular so I hated it. When I was older and more mature, I went back to play it and found a button mashing novelty.

Better Midway than other company I might give two shits about.

I can't believe that Midway is going on hard times. They gave us Mortal Kombat and the Cruis'n series as well as Namco's Pac-Man.

I hope they can get themselves back together. Sad

Edit: And let's not forget the Rampage series. That series was quite fun as well.

Eh, they just distributed Rampage; it was created by the folks at Game Refuge. Another company could release their stuff.

Area 51
Defender
Gauntlet
Galaga / Galaxian
Mortal Kombat
NARC
NBA JAM
NFL Blitz
Rampage
Revolution X
Smash TV
Spy Hunter
NHL Hitz

All great licenses and games that I hope end up in someone good's hands to develop and grow, though I have my doubts this will occur.

I hope they get sold to Blizzard. I want to play NARC in Oblivion First Person Shit-fest style. Maybe if you collect enough syringes tossed at you and hooker pubes, you can upgrade your weapon. I love spending hours picking up stupid bullshit.

Well I'm not exactly surprised.
Midway hasn't been the same since they got rid of their Arcade division.
Not only that their games lately have been sucktastic. Aside from Midway Arcade Collections, on the PS2, Midway has made a Shitty Spyhunter sequel, NARC remake, and let's face it MK Armageddon wasn't that good. I haven't played MKVDC yet but if word on the street is correct, it's not as good. Mayhap now a better company will rise up and produce something better.

Shiny is dead, but Interplay, who owns the Earthworm Jim IP, was recently resurrected. They are working on Earthworm Jim 4 and Doug TenNapel is a creative consultant.

If that's the case, we could see Scorpion vs. Space Fury! Of course, Scorpion would be an easy opponent.

Shake it, Quake it, Space Kaboom.

Unfortunate, hopefully Jim will experience a comeback of epic proportions.

Well every company dies out eventually, that is how capitalism works.

I think Midway made alot of great stuff, I miss the days of skating the skating rink with my first girlfriend and us playing some midway games from like 1981. I also remember being older and playing MK3 on this huge screen at a movie theatre with some asian guy who kept kicking my ass with Kung Lao. I refused to be anyone besides Kabal. lol

Not anymore. Maybe Midway can get a government bailout.

Not necessarily. Nintendo, Coca-Cola, Sears, and Macy's have all been around for well over 100 years. In the case of Macy's, it's been like 150 years.

Anyway, I think if Midway wants to save themselves, they need to start cranking out more nostalgia collections. They are cheap to produce, and when you sell them in the $20-$30 dollar range, people buy them. And they need to start with a Midway Light Gun Classics collection for the Wii.
