Damn, that sucks. I guess this is what happens when a company tries to rush a console out to market. :/

this is what happens when you buy an older model on ebay, is more I like it.
here's what you do:
go to sams club.
buy a new one.
put yours in the box.
return it, complaining that it wont turn on and you don't knwo what the problem is. if they refuse to take it back, saying it's not the same console, repeatedly insist that this was the one in the box, and that you want to talk to a manager. most of the time tehy won't even care or notice amyway though. if you can't do this, mail it to me. I'd be willing to do it for you.
the other route is to take it apart and fix it. it's not hard, but it's annoying, and you have to buy new screws for the heat sink. you can find a vid on how to do this online.

If I pay them to fix it, they'll just send me a newer unit, right?

Nevermind. They're going to fix it for free.

I've got one I bought used from a buddy and I have this fear in the back of mind that I'll come home from a long boring shift, pop in a game, and see the dreaded RROD.
It's held up for two months being played almost nonstop so I should be in the clear.....RIGHT?!!

You might be, you might not. The fail rate is supposedly 1 in 3. Mine RRoD'd the first time I turned it on after almost a month of non-use. There were some marathon SC4 sessions before that though.
If yours does RROD, you may want to have your buddy send it in. If he registered the serial number online at any point and you try to register it again, they'll tell you to fuck off.

Hmmm good to know. The only freezes I've had were during Fallout 3, using the railway rifle in V.A.T.S., figured out that's a game glitch from the chatter on the net, everything else has worked fine.

So, I bought the 60-gig 360 about a month ago. Are these newer models all clear of the RRoD? Like, is it strictly a problem with the first models?

it's just due to how they attahed the heat sink to the moverboard. you definitely shoudln't ahve a problem on a newer model.
