To be fair though, Sony has had a rough year and they've left the door wide open for Nintendo to expand its console market share at Sony's expense. I don't think Sony will *crumble*, but this is not going to be good for them, especially with the limited availability of their system. I don't even know what the PS3's killer launch game is supposed to be... And whatever it is, can't compete with Zelda. Sony will still do all right for themselves, but it'll be a rough start. They deserve it though. Sony's spokesmen have laughed off the Wii for months and now they're getting their just desserts.

Then again, it's possible that 360 and the Wii will team up and run the PS3 into the ground. That certainly seems to be Microsoft's plan.

The N64 wasn't innovative though, and that was the problem. In an era when it made more sense to use discs, Nintendo used more costly cartridges. They gave Square a lot of money to help them develop FF7 and then Square bailed on them because the game couldn't fit on cartridges in any reasonable way. With the GCN, Nintendo finally moved to discs, but they used mini DVDs to curb piracy. And it was SO AWESOME switching discs halfway through Capcom's REmake.

And Nintendo has had a bunch of pricy, undersupported peripherals... The Power Pad, the Super Scope, ROB, The Power Glove, the bongos for Conga, the GCN microphone, the N64 microphone, the GCN modem...

Nintendo has certainly had its fair share of mistakes, including those embarassing NOA policies that eventually alienated developers, which is what really buried the N64.

But still, the PS3 is nothing special. It's just a souped-up PS2. It's a pricier 360. I mean, honestly, why the fuck are people shooting each other over PS3s? THERE'S NO GOOD GAMES FOR IT YET. For the price of a PS3, you could get a 360, Condemned, Dead Rising, and Gears of War. You won't have to wait in any long line or worry about availability, and no one will mug you.

Sony itself doesn't really have any talent in its gaming division. The systems themselves are nothing special and the games they've published themselves are almost always boring and derivative. Sony's strength has always lay in its third party support. That's risky and it can end up backfiring. Konami, Capcom, and Square all started off with Nintendo, because that's where the money was. And when it became apparent that developing and publishing titles for Nintendo wasn't going to make them the same money it had in the past, they jumped ship to Sony. Don't think it can't happen to Sony. It already has in the handheld market. The best Konami and Square titles are on the DS, not the PSP. Capcom hasn't really done anything exciting with either system yet.

Of the three console makers, Nintendo is only one with any real first party support. Microsoft has some good second party support, but they also have a major liability in the form of Rare. It's like the entire company just stopped trying after the sale to Microsoft. Thus, Nintendo always has a guaranteed hook where as MSN and Sony really don't. GTA? Final Fantasy? Devil May Cry? Metal Gear? Onimusha? Tekken? You'll see those games on whatever system can offer the game companies the sales numbers they crave. Nintendo has at least a ahalf dozen franchises that won't see on any other system.
