Ted Stevens (Alaska) is the longest serving Republican in the Senate. Before the election, he was convicted on seven counts of lying about accepting gifts from a lobbyist, a conviction he plans to appeal. He was his reelection bid before the absentee ballots were counted, but lost once they were, in a very close election. He has served Alaska for 40 years and has gotten the state much pork barrel legislation, so despite his conviction, he was still held in well regard among Alaskans despite the felony conviction. But the conviction, combined with the country's economic troubles, proved too much for him and he was defeated. He will not seek a recount.

FUN FACT: Ted Stevens is a huge fan of The Hulk and would often wear a Hulk tie while discussing issues important to him or filibustering against ones he was strongly against.

Well, then I guess Ted Stevens has secured his place on the ballot of the Marvel Universe's 2012 election.

While I'm glad he won't be a Senator anymore, I would have rather had Palin pick his successor, instead of having another democratic Senator in the Congress. Alaska is still largely a conservative state, it's just that between a corrupt GOPer and a random democrat, the electorate made the logical decision of going with the dem.

I'm not big on career politicians anyway. Let him find a real job.

Yeah, 58, with the two independents that caucus with them. If they can somehow pullout a win with Franken in Minnesota, and take the runoff election in Georgia, they would have the supermajority that would be immune to filibusters.

Let's be honest, they'd be pretty much immune to filibusters even with Stevens and Coleman. It's not like there aren't moderate Republicans in the senate. Besides, invoking cloture doesn't necessarily guarantee the vote's going to go your way.

Very true, the moderates will make the difference, depending on the strength of their opinion for each issue.

If it's going to be 4 years of indecision, I want the Jedi Council reinstated.

Seriously, we do not live in a perfect America where even having a majority means things just zipping down the fun chute*. With exceptions I guess...

I actually like Begich quite a bit. Stevens and Young are slimy as hell, and they can't be tossed out soon enough.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind.
