The musicial episode
THey just sang throughout the thing and then snake came in and they got him out by singing then he came back at the end of the show and says he is gonna kill them but the simpsons say that they are done inging and he leaves
they aired it like twice

They have to actually kill the show before it can be a death knell! And season 9 is definitely not the death knell season, I'm leaning towards 12 on that.

There was definitely some good, classic eps in S9, like the one where Homer coaches Bart's football team, and I think there's a flashback ep to how Lisa got her Sax or something.
But this ep and the one where Skinner isn't really Skinner, in a bad homage to the "Return of Martin Guerre" spoil my memory of that season.

That episode was terrible, but it resulted in one of favorite jokes from the last 5 seasons:
Lisa: We'll just call you Snowball II and pretend none of this ever happened.
Skinner: Isn't that kind of a cheat?
Lisa: I suppose it is, Principle Tamzarian
Skinner: Well then...Lisa, Snowball II....

And they poke fun at that episode themselves in the "Behind the Laughter" one in season 11, about how family turmoil led to cheap guest shots and nonsensical plots and it shows Skinner explaining that he's not the real Seymour Skinner.
