I'm just about to go to Lunar Subterrnaean. Cecil's at level 47, Rosa's at 47, Kain is at 49, Edge is at 46, and Rydia is at 44. Am I set to slaughter my way to Zeromus, or am I going dick first into a river of shit, and thus need to level grind?
Oh, this is the original SNES version, not DS.

I'd say level yourself up to the mid 50's to the early 60's.

Did you get Bahamut?
To get him you needed to go through two Behemoths. If you were able to do that, you are good to enter the final areas of the game.
Make sure that you grab the Crystal Sword and gear on your way down.
Just before you use the Crystal on Zeromus use the Masmune as an item on everyone (casts haste).
The safest way to take him out is to wall Kain, cast flare & white on Kain. Attack with Cecil, throw the Excalibur with Edge followed by all the ninja stars.
He'll be dead very quickly.
You should be mid 50's to low 60's when you fight Zeromus.
NOTE:
The DS version is MUCH harder. I leveled Cecil like crazy and have him at around 70ish and I still have a hard time. I'm about to enter the Giant of Babil. The game is just scaled to be much harder.

Have you been to the Land of Monsters and earned the Asura and Leviathan call spells?
As GP said, you have Bahamut, but Asura is a very good call spell to have as well, because she has the chance to cast LIFE or CURE3 on all your party members, which is a useful back-up to have in case Rosa "All I'm Good For Is Healing Stuff" Farrel gets raped and killed by Zeromus.
Last time I played through FF2, it was the translated version of Final Fantasy IV (Hard Type), I had all my guys in the 60-63 range when I took on Zeromus. The American SNES game is Easy Type, so Zeromus should be doable once your last guy hits 50.

Asura is hit or miss.
Definitely worth having, but it is a 50/50 shot that it will do something you need.
Also, She casts Cure 3, Cure 4, or Life on everyone. All of them are much more powerful than Rosa's versions at the same level.

Yes, she is hit or miss, but when Zeromus pulls some crazy shit that wipes out half your party, sometimes she's your best option.
I'll often do the battle using Rydia and Rosa as defensive characters, casting Asura and Cure 4 every turn, and beat him down with Cecil, Edge, and Kain.

Definitely a winning combination if you are in the upper 60's or higher. What will determine the outcome with that style of battle is the amount of MP you have. If you can keep it up, you will win.
Somehow I find that Edge dies every single time I do the fight. It doesn't seem to matter what level I am. Without being in the back row, he just doesn't have the defense he needs to be fighting upfront with Cecil and Kain.

Well, I'll use Edge sometimes to throw MP potions at Rosa and Rydia. I'll usually set them off before the situation becomes critical, because as you said, Edge has a tendency to die.

Oh, one other great end game strategy.
There are two party members who matter the most in the final battle.
Rydia and Cecil.
So, in the crystal floors you should let everyone die except for those two. Then level them up. Go back to the save point and repeat until they are about 10-15 levels higher. It sounds ridiculous, but they will gain levels so frigg'n fast.
When the final battle comes, you won't find yourself scrambling to heal Cecil since you will have gained him about 2000 extra health. Rydia's magic will become insanely powerful and she should live through some of the more random inopportune attacks that Zeromos throws.
You might need to invest one hour of grinding if you choose to do this.

Leveling up Rydia and Cecil separately was always one of my main strategies going into the final battle. It seems like everything else has been covered; The only other thing I can think of it to throw the Spoon if you have it and haven't thrown it already.

Oh sure, after I quit emulators cold turkey and delete the game and the Super Nintendo player from my Computer everyone gives their advice.
Oh irony, you are a harsh mistress (but at least you have great elasticity in your vaginal walls).
I'll say this though Syd, I was looking at the FFIV entry in the 100 greatest SNES games list, and you said the call spells Imp, Bomb and Mage, weren't worth getting. Except the strategy guide I was using never mentions those spells, so I could only assume you meant Asura (which I actually did get) Bahamut, and Leviathan.

No, he means Imp, Bomb, and Mage.
Those 3 are hidden ones you have a 1/64 chance of getting after defeating an appropriate enemy.

The Japanese version of the game had a fourth rare call spell, Cockatrice, that was removed from the US version for some inexplicable reason.
There's another semi-secret call spell as well.
Find the unconscious Yang in the Sylph cave, talk to the Sylphs, then go back to Fabul and talk to his wife. She'll give you a frying pan. Go back and hit him with the frying pan and you'll learn the Sylph call.
If you're really bored, you can also try and get the Adamant Armor, which is fucking impossible. But it's the best armor in the game, and even Rosa can use it, and it will greatly help against Zeromus.

Don't you have to get a tail for that?
Anyways, I'm finished with FFIV. I was gonna finish it ASAP so I could toss out my emulator, but then I thought, why wait? I'm already behind in school and so much stuff as it is. It's a seperate discussion, but I'm finished with emulators. I'm strictly playing my video games on TV's and handhelds only. So often I feel like I'm just trapped to my computer, and after a while I feel extremely isolated.

Ah.. the gold old spoon. Memories.
As for some of the other comments, the additional summons are just there for fun. They add no additional utility to Rydia's spell casting portfolio.
I have never tried to get Bahamut without Ashura or Leviathan. I might play through just to see what happens and what the dialog is.
As for the Adamant Armor... oh boy... here it goes.
There is a room inside the final dungeon where there is a 1/64 chance that you will encounter Pink Puff enemies. They are very difficult and generally come in groups. Should you kill them, there is a 1/64 chance (per Pink Puff) that you will receive a Pink Tail. If you get a Pink Tail, you do what you would normally do with a tail... The result from the chain is an amazing set of armor that any character can wear.
As far as the Dark Matter goes, does it exist in the original FFII? I was under the impression it was introduced in the GBA version. As far as what it does, I think it reduces Big Bang's effect. But I've never wasted my time with it. I just let Edge die and kick Zeromus in the nuts with Cecil and Rydia.

I'm not sure about the Dark Matter. Ironically enough, it's usually a waste of time trying to steal from a final boss, which is probably why I never knew about it.

I never knew about Crystal Sword or Adamant Armor the first time I beat Zeromus. Lvls in the mid to high 40's (no level-dependent stat gain), so level matters. I used to have a VHS tape of me beating Zeromus, but I taped over it with more important shit. Rosa's 'Cure 3' kicks ass during the fight along with Rydia's 'Bahamut' and Cecil's attack. Edge throws all the shit you cant equip/use anymore, and Kain jumps. I beat Zeromus so easy back then. Damn, I'm gonna play the game the whole way through now.
Cecil had the Excalibur and all.
