I read the original list done by the staff and thought it was pretty solid, the readers choice list so far isn't too good. I'm down to 58 and so for 2 Madden, 2 ESPN NFL and 2 Wrestling games have made the top 100 game of ALL TIME. That's a bit bullshit to me as basically each year the football games are better than the previous year more or less.
I'll have more thoughts when I finish the list but having 4 football games already is a bit irritating.

Edit: 5 football games from 100-50, 10% of the first half of the list are football games.

I'm really giddy about the 10-1, because it has 2 MGS games, and in the top 25 there are MGS, MGS3, and MGS4.

Just the fact that the ambulance comes in and runs people over makes that the best football game I've ever seen. They should do that with the next Madden game, maybe then I would play it.

Well that won't happen because Madden isn't a game it's a football simulator. And what the fuck Shenmue 2 is on the Dreamcast is number 10

I always hated Shenmue and its sequal. Sorry gameplay, crappy art design and a terrible story.
Yu Suzuki did a promo tour in the United States that stopped at the Software Ect I worked at in San Jose. I came close to telling him my feelings on his games but my manager thwarted my plans. It would have been an ass hole move, but whatever, I am also the guy that was throwing empty PS2 demo boxes into the angry crowd on release night.

Shenue being number 10 almost made me cry. 10th best videogame of all time? from what I've heard it's more of an interactive book than videogame.
I have no problem with a football game making the list but too many made it.
The one done by the site staff was much more accurate I think.

I just noticed that there were no Sonic games on that list. I thought at least one of the Genesis ones would be on that list.

Well here's the thing they didn't list Shenmue as 10 they listen shenmue 2 the DREAMCAST version, as in the one with no English in it. This list is dumb but at least it's not just FF7 100 times

So was Myst. (It was just a bunch of puzzled tied together by a vague plot.) And, many people hail Myst has one of the greatest games of all time.
Or, how about the Sim games? (Simcity, The Sims, etc.) They're the exact opposite of Shenmue 2. They are all play with no story or plot.
There is no universal rule as to what makes a videogame a videogame. Also, seeing how the world is made up of 6 billion+ people, there will never be universal agreement on what the best anything is.
But, for some reason, people love Top Lists. Go figure.

I could never get into Zelda, never. MGS3 was good, but I thought it was the weakest of the first three.(Never played MGS4)

I am going to call this list exactly what it is. Fanboy crap.
First of all, the Metal Gear games are good, but not that fucking good. No Metal Gear game should even be close to the top 10. This is ALL video games of ALL time. They just don't belong there.
Metroid Prime at #25 and Mario Galaxies #21. What the fuck? These two games both belong in the top 10.
Zelda Windwaker was a great game, but was way too high at 29.
Final Fanatasy VII... *sigh*
The first title I actually agreed with was Halflife 2 which seemed to fit well into its position on the list.
Knights of the old republic is too low at #34. This game is groundbreaking with its gameplay, amazing with its story, and should definitely be in the top 20.
At #40 I stopped reading the list. Arguably the worst Metroid game ever was Metroid Prime 2. But there it was... it was above the original Metroid and Metroid Prime 3. This game was utter crap and has no business in the top 500 games of all time.
Fuck this list.

I understand that readers' choice is based on popularity, but this is ridiculous.
They mention at least 5 football games, among other sports games, thus preventing some of the truly greatest games ever from making the list.
Any Sonic game before Sonic Heroes could have made the list.
Star Fox 64 should have made the list.
Any Command and Conquer game, preferably from the Red Alert series, should have made the list.
And Kirby game should have made the list.
And where the HELL is Doom!? You know, ONE OF THE MOST IMPORTANT FIRST-PERSON SHOOTERS IN VIDEO GAME HISTORY!? Its exclusion is inexcusable.

I never bothered to look at the list past the top five(I still don't believe OoT was that great, but again like I said I never thought Zelda as a whole is that great.), but if Doom isn't on the list and Halo is, than it's BULL****.

Man, I love Ocaria Of Time. Played it through a whole bunch of times. It was released 10 years ago when I was 15 (the prime age for when such folks are likely to decide when something is their favorite). But is it the greatest game of all time? No.
"Final Fantasy III features 14 permanently playable characters, a record for the series. Among them is a Moogle named Mog, who became the mascot for the US version of the game despite being one of the least important characters. "
And it was quite possibly the biggest mistake Square ever made. Having that stupid cat on the cover completely turned me off. They should have had something better like Terra walking in that mech, at least it would have had me thinking briefly that it was a robot game or something.

So far not impressed with this list. Maybe if I see the whole thing, but if the bottom is anything like the top it will be highly disappointing.
EDIT: Having gone through the whole list I can say it's gets better toward the top. Broght back some memories, and more than a few games I own but have never gotten around to beating(I'm looking at YOU Ocarina of Time, Super Metroid, and Wind Waker).

I would argue that Ocarina of Time was the best game when it came out, and for a long time after that. 3D games do get dated though. 2D don't suffer the same way.
I think that the new Zelda game is better than Ocarina of Time.
Also, Super Mario Galaxy for those who haven't played it, is just absolutely amazing. Right now, it is my number one pick for a list like this.
Still, many of the SNES games would fall into the top 10 for me.
FFVI (North American FFIII) was an excellent game and deserves some credit, but I agree. Mog on the cover didn't make sense.
I still think that FFIV was a better story, and defined classes make for a better overall game.
