I thought I'd throw this post up because I am about to acquire my GED. I dropped out as a junior, having that normal teen angst towards all adults and authority figures, while in reality 90% of them were trying to legitimately help me. I obviously realize that now, and it's taken a lot more time than it should have to go ahead and get some balls and admit my mistakes. I had too many problems in high school to deal with at the time, as my girlfriend had just died in a car wreck so I just didn't care. I have gotten past all that, and am now ready to move on with my education.

Sorry for spilling my guts, but I'm basically wondering if anyone else here dropped out of high school.

Hey, josh, there's nothing wrong with dropping out of school. Hell I'm 24 and I'm still in school, not high school, but school nonetheless. My point is a lot of people will drop out of school. Whether it be college or high school, people drop out of school. Whether or not to continue after dropping out is another decision. I think it's excellent that you went ahead and got your GED. The high school diploma/GED is the first step into educational advancement.

I don't have my diploma either. I'm not going to get into the circumstances, but once my job gets going, I'm going to try to get my GED as well. I was going to a few years ago, and then circumstances, again, stopped me from completing it, but it should be no problem. Any of the tests that were given when I was there, I aced. It's just a matter of getting back there when I work other things out.

I never finished high school. Personally I think the educational system k-12 is flawed. I do just fine in college.

On a related note, for a while I helped adult learners pass their GED, and it is bewildering both how easy that test is and how much of a difficult time people have with it.

Personally, I agree with you. The public school system in general sucks ass. The government within the school system is wack and I wouldn't doubt it if it were corrupt too. The US really needs to take a look at the public school system from the inside out. Kids get singled out as being "stupid" all the time. And for some reason, science and math are always the most important subjects. Go figure.

Social Studies classes are the worst. Every history/civics teacher I've ever had (except one, the good one) does all of their teaching using the overhead projector with the same prewritten notes since the last curriculum change.

I don't know about any of you, but I don't learn well with the overhead and the manditory notes they make you copy word for word then turn in for credit. I'm too busy writing to pay attention to any discussion. I do much better with an active discussion and all note taking done while reading the assigned chapter. Actually, I do just fine remembering what I've read after it is covered in class. I don't really even need notes.

They like to say I'll learn better if I write it down. They are wrong. Some people maybe. Not me. I'm guessing I'm no the only one. I think the overhead is just for lazy teachers.

Its funny because social studies are really the only teachers I had that did this.

The system totally needs a rehaul. But some of them got it right. The high school I went to actually had a majority of competent teachers who not only knew their field but were actually interesting. But then again, I am actually interested in science, math, history, etc. Then again, many of my history teachers are the most talked about teachers in school. My favorite history teacher (and, actually, my wrestling coach) not only discussed things on a level that high schoolers could understand but often injected those discussions with bits of humor that including shocking swear words, Cartman voices, and video game references. He once said during a weak moment at a meet, that he had felt he sold his soul in order to teach kids and wondered if it was worth it. All I could say was that if he reached even one student it was worth it, right? Best teacher ever.
But the other schools I had gone to have been horrible, actively hold back students who where ahead of the curve and even punishing them. I know I was not allowed to skip a grade (or two) because it "would discourage other students" and a classmate of mine was actually SENT back a grade because he was too intelligent for the class (whatever logic that makes I failed to find).

Sorry for the rant

I'm getting mine in two weeks officially (long bullshit).

after that I may quit my job and get a new one in the city doing IT stuff, which I'm not trained for.

then I'll use that money to get into college, then learn to make vidcons.

I graduated high school.

Had issues with mental illness and then left college early.

OCD/ADD for anyone who doesn't know me from earlier posts.

I have worked at colleges for the last 6 years, but I will probably never go back as a student.

Anyone who looks to better themselves through education because of desire and passion is definitely a winner in my book.

Those of you who go for your GED because you realize it is important to you, I commend you.

Anyone thinking of dropping out of high school, I would say you are crazy. Don't do it. Just suffer like everyone else did, there is more than grades that are acquired at school.

true words, and I commend you for saying them.

most of us learn this the hard way later in life, when it's too late.

stay in school, kids.

Brains are required for thinking. And don't be too hard on the little retard. I'm sure that he thought it was mighty clever. I'm proud of him for putting that many words together without a spelling mistake.

I didn't intend this to be a battle of the forum members so I'd rather there be no name calling. Mind you there are people here I also consider retards but I'm not telling. Neener neener.

Do they still use overhead projectors in schools? I would have thought they'd moved on to powerpoint presentations by now. Damn I'm old.

too many long posts for me to catch up, but i agree that the curriculum is way too archaic. it needs a huge overhaul.

i graduated w/my class but i never went to college.

im considering going back so i can get a degree in something that would allow me to join the peace corps.

either that or become a mathematician. yahoo said the average mathematician makes about $80k/year

I dunno. I graduated in '99. At that time there were several teachers using overheads. History teachers always seemed more guilty than others. Once I went to college (2X dropout), I don't remember anybody using one.

My high school still uses overheads.

But, then again, last year my high school couldn't even afford lunch. Seriously, you were forced to bring your lunch to school, or go hungry.
