I just did recently. The assorted destritus of five years, and a who's who of malicious code, is now gone. My computer is fresh and clean until I inevitably return to my ROM habit.

You should do it right now without saving anything. Go on. I'll wait.

The ROM Habit is undefeatable, no matter how many times you give it up, you will start getting roms again. Also, screw your comment about cleaning my harddrive, I am glad about the cool roms I have. I have a rom of fucking LOZ : OOT and trust me, it was a bitch to find.

I have like 30 gigs of roms, the same shit I've had since around 2003. I've got the complete mame romset, SNES, Genesis, N64, a ton of PS1 iso's, Saturn iso's, some more obscure shit.

About a week after I reformat, I feel like it was a waste. I always re-install the same bullshit and keep a lot of the same files around anyway.
