Which one is better in terms of longevity and expandability? Which one would you rather have? Why?
Another question: is the original style PS2 still available anywhere brand new?

Slim has 0% chance of DRE on games(I think), plays PS1 games better, and is quieter but lacks the expansion bay, original has the expansion bay. Since I generally never needed the expansion bay, I much prefer the slim.
As for the second question, I don't believe so. At least not in retail stores, maybe online you could find one new.

Sure it's big and bulky but the Orignal has damage saftey to it... I dropped mine twice and it still works!

Can you back this up? Does the original style PS2 have DRE problems??
I know I'm asking a lot of questions. It's because I'm debating whether to get the old style PS2 or newer slimline. I'm just trying to obtain some opinions. Post on.

Well, my first PS2 which I got in Christmas 2002(Original model) ended up killing itself while I was playing Dynasty Warriors 3 somewhere around March. The second one(Another original) I got in summer that year seemed alright, but a few years later I got Marvel vs. Capcom 2 and it ended getting DRE'd 90% of the time, and when it did run it would most likely freeze up at loading points and the same also happened with my PS1 games(But, I still had my original PS1). The slim I got this year was able to play MvC2(same disk) with no problems, so that's my experience...
It could've just been my lousy luck, but that was what happened as far as I can remember. I hear that the later versions of the original model had the DRE problems fixed though.

I have the old model PS2 but it depends on the version. The first version had the most problems, probably because they rushed to put it to market on time. I remember my friend couldn't play any games from 2003 on because he was on the old version, the first version. I'd figure that if you get an old Model, make sure it came out after 2003 or 2004... Then it gets into the slim territory, which might be good if you bring wherever you go and also don't need a Hard-Drive attachement.

You could buy a program such as like Free Loader or another product that stores games on the HDD, you would then "Theoretically" not need the disc's anymore. Or if you want to play FFXI. I would definitly go with a slim one. The chances of an old model breaking down are far more likely than the slim ones. Here is an example why.
When repairing PS2's (old model) there are several gears inside which delegate between DVD format and blue backed games. To read the two different types it needed to be aligned in a different manner. That is why when most peoples PS2's "broke" they could only play one or the other. When repairing them, there would be times where the proper alignment could not be found. It's alot more difficult then it sounds. This is also another reason why there are significantly less Blue Backed games then the DVD (silver) ones

I have the big one, my friend had the slim one and it was a mess, always overheated and it always had one other problem which I cant remember right now but Id definetly go for the original.

I like the slim line better , but im currently using the original model because the little sponge stopper thing fell out. so I guess I have to vote original by default.

I went through 3 Large PS3 since launch, and I have one Slim that I got 2 years ago that works like a champ!
(I even put a flip lid on it, and can play backups way better then my old large ones could.)

I automatically like the slim one better because its disk tray isn't automatic. It's bad enough having to deal with my 360's disk tray (oddly enough, the only bad thing that has happened to my console); having to deal with TWO consoles with that defect would drive me insane.
Plus, the slim version is the only PS2 that I ever owned.

I got my Slim PS2 about 3 years ago and it broke down on me about 1 or 2 years ago. My Original PS2 is still working to date perfectly, it has a problem loading a couple games like GTA : SA, but I've had it for like 4ish years.

I broke my original trying to fix a jammed disc tray, the power button on the cover is attached to the mb by a thin strip of metal, the cover fell off the table and yanked the strip out of the board, so even though I had unjammed the tray, I could not turn the ps2 on ever again. The slim is cooler because of the simpler disc lid, but I seem to remember a report that the big fat power supply would overheat and cause fires, also it loses points for no hard drive space.

the original slimlines were MASSIVE fire hazards because of that power supply, but after a recall that problem is almost nonexistent now.
other than the HDD bay, there is no benefit to having an old model ps2 over a slimline.
up until recently I didn't have a memory card, so I left mine on for weeks with fire pro wrestling in it, and did not experience any problems due to heat.
Blue backed CD format games were only used because the DVD technology wasn't usable at the time of launch, I believe (don't quote me on that). but yes, the problem is that the older ps2's had to spin faster to read one type of media, which would cause heat, which would make the cheap plastic parts inside warp, this fucking up the angle of the laser, making it unable to read discs. sometimes you could fix this by turning that screw to adjust the angle of the laser, but it wasn't always reliable.
as far as programs like the freeloader and stuff, I believe that can work with any formatted harddrive, as long as it plugs into the USB port of the PS2 (then again, I don't even remember if the slimline PS2 still has USB ports).

and yes, I too have felt the pain of having the power and reset buttons yanked free of the motherboard whilst trying to remove the cover.

I have an original, it just seems like there are too many problems with it; as soon as I got it and turned it on for the first time, there was something wrong with the disc tray. Every time I pressed the open button it would make this horrible "Whdddddduuurr" sound. Eventually it started getting caught on the outside of my PS2 and now the tray lid breaks off every time I try to close it. A slimline would probably be a much better investment.
Think of it this way; would you rather have an original NES or a top-loader?

The original PS2 is prone to eventually dying, yet it is the most expandable and feels the most durable
The slimline is the newest and fixs alot of the overheating problems,yet you cant use a mod chip in it.

When the strip tore out I stared at it blankly before yelling SHIIIIT!!!! I had just bought the fucker a week before. 
I liked the hard drive bay, I hid my weed in back when I still smoked.

god, trying to insert the strip back in was such a pain. took me forever to get it working again after tearing that strip out.
anyhow, another benefit of the old ps2's is that you can also attach the network adapter, the little box you need to get online.
granted there were only like 10 games you can play online but if you wanna get online w/the ps2, you need that.
otherwise, go slim.

the original is better because it doesnt overheat fats and my grandpa has had his since they came out and my brother had his for 2 years or less and it broke
(my brothers was slim and my grandpa's was original)
