So, I recently found out about the whole math geek controversy about this. Apparently, 0.999... (that is, .999 with the 9 repeating an infinite amount of times) is actually mathematically equal to one. I'm no math genius, but I still find this rather interesting.

PROOF 1:

let x = 0.999...

10x = 9.999...

10x - x = 9.999... - 0.999...

9x = 9

x = 1

0.999... = 1

PROOF 2:

1/3 = 0.333...

3 * 1/3 = 3 * 0.333...

3/3 = 0.999...

1 = 0.999...

Yeah, I'll admit it. I'm a total geek.

THERE ARE FOUR LIGHTS!

And your proofs are wrong. .999... times 10 does not equal 9.999..., and .333... x 3 does not equal .999... either.

EXPLAIN DAMN IT!

I told you, I ain't a math genius. I don't see why .333 * 3 doesn't equal .999....

There's even a wiki page on the subject.

I remember Danica McKeller (Whinny Cooper) showed how .9 (repeating) equalled 1 on Attack of the Show, but damn if I can't find the clip.

.333... is just a means of writing out 1/3 in decimal form, and it's not precise, because .333 infinitely repeats. You can't really do any math with it. You need to do the math with the fractions for it to turn out right.

.999..., however, is close enough to 1 that they may as well be the same thing. You can't put any numbers between them no matter how hard you try, and as far as I know, you can't represent .999... in fractional notation...the closest you can get is 1/1...or 1. If you ever needed to do math with .999... (very doubtful), you'd be stuck using 1. That doesn't make them the same, or equal. Infinity is something that's hard to wrap one's head around, and even harder to put down on a piece of paper.

Of course, those friggin mathematics people can make imaginary numbers, so I'm not going any further into it. They probably found a way to do it that makes sense to them and maybe 12 other people.

EDIT: Fuckit, I don't know what I'm talking about. The talk page of that Wikipedia article has a FAQ about it.

It's called the Dennis Miller quotient.

A real proof relies on calculus. Why? because the "..." means repeat indefinitely, i.e., suggests a limit.

formally, .9999... = .9 + .09 + .009 + ... = (sum from n=1 to infinity) 9/(10^n) = 9*(sum from n=1 to infinity) 1/(10^n)

The last sum mentioned is equal to 1/9, (the very concept of an infinite sum is part of calculus. Therefore, calculus is required to prove this - if you want to see a detailed proof, I will be glad to provide one).

Therefore, .9999... = 9*(1/9) = 1. Q.E.D. (sort of)

Proof of 0.999...=1:

0.999...= 9/10 + 9/100 + ...=

9(0.1 + 0.01+ 0.001...)=>

let a= 0.1
and b= a + a^2 + a^3 + ... a^n

then ab= a^2 + a^3 +... a^n

then b-ab= b-0.1b=0.9b= a

then b= 1/9

Thus, 9(0.1 + 0.01 + 0.001...)= 9b= 1

Implies 0.999...= 0/10 + 9/100 + ...= 1

Therefore, 0.999...=1

Q.E.D. BITCHES.

Yes, I am majoring in Math and Physics. I am thus a nerd. (This is sad, I know).

Actually, unless European math differs in some way from your American math, we write it down like this:

x = 0,(9)
10x=9,(9) [We move the decimal one digit to the right]
10x-x=9,(9) - 0,(9)
9x = 9 | /9 [Dividing both sides by nine]
x = 1

Yeah, but it's the old world (mainly: Greece, Mesopotamia, Egypt) that invented math. Suck on it, yankees.

In before, Aztecs. They used time-travelling methods to steal such things as potatoes and corn from us, hard-working europeans and bring them back to their land, thus altering history forever.

Still, as a Canadian, you (sterotypically) must hate the US in every way imaginable, so let's (stereotypically) tell them that what they call "soccer" is in fact "football", and what they call "football" is in fact called "rugby". Also, let's (stereotypically) boast your advanced social laws, such as gay marriage. And don't forget to (stereotypically) put maple syrup on everything. Yummy!

Still, your gay marriage laws are pretty damn sweet.

I'm still kinda sad that decimal time with the Swatch Internet Time and its .beat unit didn't catch on.

No one invented math. Math has always existed and is a part of nature. All man ever did was find a way to express it.

That made the most sense out of all of the examples.

Also the argument is not that 1 is close to 0.999...

The argument is that 1 actually equals 0.999...
