EDIT: This matter has been resolved. Thanks to Chrisby for his input on the matter and thanks to Syd for having a forum whose members are better than Google.

In my younger days, a friend of mind had a NES cart that I can remember playing but remember nothing about, and it's bothering me because I'd like to figure out what the hell I was trying to do in the game.

What I do remember:
It was some sort of Sci-fi thing.
It included a top-down view overworld kinda thing with doors and obstacles.
Entering a door changed the game to a side-scrolling shoot-em-up/platformer thing.
Pressing the select button in the overworld view depleted your oxygen and you lost a life.
It definitely was a NES game (and disappeared at a garage sale when my friend's parents got him a SNES).

What I do not remember:
The box art
The title
The publisher/developer

This question has been on my mind for about 14 years, and I'd like to just play it once more to try to figure out what the whole point was. Any help on this is appreciated.

Aside from the oxygen thing, it sounds kinda like Blaster Master.

Chrisby thinks he knows the answer.

Dash Galaxy in the Alien Asylum.

A friend of mine from way back when showed me that game. I specifically remember the oxygen thing, because your character would NEVER "die", even if he got blown up or something; his oxygen would just magically get depleted.

Alas, the game I'm trying to remember does not involve a runaway mutant frog.

At least...if it did, it didn't tell me that part.

So one more thing I remember is that you don't get to drive a tank.
