The only AYAOTD episode I particularly remember was this weird episode where this blond dude with long hair was running away from these aliens that captured people in glowing spider webs.

First off, i haved laughed and enjoyed a good internet article in awhile. Leave it to syd to deliver.
And even though the article was enough, syd had to go and do this:

Since she played margaret trudeau in that obscure TV movie about the famous PM, I've had the hots for her and she make me further believe in ross's statements that canadian women are hottest type. (our ross, not the douche from the show)

And the one with the dissected claw that granted wishes... Hmmmm, brb, youtube. |
I've been told that that episode was shamelessly stolen from a Goosebumps book. True?
Great article, Syd; another hugely enjoyable read, and the slew of pics and animated GIFs were an excellent addition. That's one of the few episodes of the series I ever watched, and I remember at the time thinking it was pretty darn stupid. I think I preferred Tales from the Cryptkeeper over AYAOTD -- the kid-friendly animated spin-off of Tales from the Crypt, another brilliant show.

Pretty sure S1 predated Goosebumps. The claw was, I believe, stolen from an episode of either Twilight Zone or Outer Limits. The same concept was used on a Simpsons Halloween episode but with a monkey paw.

I don't know if it was an Are You Afraid Of The Dark episode, but I faintly remember a very similar show. I think I only watched one episode when I was five, I think. It dealt with a radio station only for dead people that could be reached on 109.0 FM (that's where the creepiness begins - radios only go up to 108) and a kid that begins to listen to it in a car (one of those you transport coffins in - I don't remember the name) and suddenly he discovers he's dead.
I was scared shitless after that episode. Good times.

And Gilbert Gottfried said "Chew gum?". LOL. That was an AYAOTD episode.

Which all take their cues from The Monkey's Paw, written by W.W. Jacobs in 1902.

Syd, the Infocom text parser bit was brilliant. The last time I actually laughed out loud since the misleading video game titles article.
