X isn't actually Mega Man. There has been a huge debate about it on various fansites, slurs were thrown, children were used as blunt weapons and in the end I think somebody from Capcom (probably Inafking himself) stepped in and declared that X is not Mega Man. I can't find the exact quote, though. It's on wikipedia article for X.
Generally, the most agreed version of events between the Classic series and X is that Wily activated Zero prematurely (as opposed to waiting thiry years like Dr. Light did with X [stated in the MMX intro screen]) as shown in Bass' ending for Mega Man 2: The Power Fighters. Zero, having no ethics and stuff programmed within, killed Wily and most of the original cast until somebody sacrificed themselves to stop him.

No, that's just more fan speculation. Zero didn't kill anyone of the original Megaman series, and Infaking has said as much in a recent interview. Fans will just have to accept that the classic Megaman series and the X series have far less to do with one another than they would like to imagine.

Which was called Mega Man 9 in development. In the ending for Bass, Wily also mentions he's making a new robot called King II, that will be more powerful than anything.
Also, you forgot all of the games on Game Boy, Wily Tower and other miscellanceous games.

I'm pretty let down that the story doesn't bridge the classic series and the X series too. I'm also saddened that Bass isn't in the game either.

Enh, it would have been cute to see an 8-bit version, but you could probably just find it on the internet. Besides, Bass sucks. Fuck him and Treble.

Bass actually had an 8-bit version of himself in a game for the Neo Geo Pocket Color.
He also had a two-bit (?) version of himself in Rockman and Forte for the WonderSwan:

In any case... I FUCKING DID IT! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH
After about a million attempts and chokes, I finally beat the game without getting damaged. Eventually, the only thing I had to worry about were the robot master rematches at the end, particularly Tornado Man. Since it takes some time from the beginning of the Wily stages to get there, it got extremely frustrating.
Well, I guess that's all there is to report. I also got the "beat the game 30 times" challenge completed while going through all these attempts. Thus, I have completed every challenge. And what do you get for accomplishing this feat? Why, a gold rupee! Err, wait. Actually, you don't get anything. But, it is still something to be proud of, I guess.
Now to wait for some DLC...

Personally, I love fighting all the bosses one more time through. Made me feel like I REALLY am at the end of the game.
