I always was on the Nintendo side of the force, but now I find that Sega consoles are actually good.
So, what games should I get? I'm asking about games on the Genesis or the Master System. Preferably games that have been released on the Virtual Console, but I'm no stranger to emulation.

You should totally check out the IRC channel.
While you're at it, go check out my band, Her Majesty's Heroines.

Genesis - Gunstar Heroes. That is all you will ever need.

Also, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, if you haven't already played it. Incredible.

The Master System version of Sonic The Hedgehog.
It's not just the Genesis version with crappier graphics. A lot of the levels are different.

Oh, also: Vectorman, Boogerman, Kid Chameleon, General Chaos, Shining Force series.

For the genesis, Streets of Rage 2 and Phantasy Star. For the Saturn, Panzer Dragoon Saga, Radiant Silvergun, and Legend of Dragoon.

For the Genesis I'd recommend...
Vectorman 1 and 2, Streets of Rage 2 and 3, Sonic 2, Sonic 3 & Knuckles, Comix Zone, Dynamite Headdy, Gunstar Heroes, Decap Attack, Alien Storm, Ghouls'N Ghosts, Street Fighter II: Champion Edition, Out Run, Revenge of Shinobi, Shinobi III, Sol-Deace, and Toe Jam & Earl.
My personal favorites are Vectorman, Dynamite Headdy, and Revenge of Shinobi.
For Saturn I would say...
Daytona U.S.A., Virtua Fighter 2, Virtua Cop, Virtua Racing, Clockwork Knight, Guardian Heroes, and Virtual On.
Also, most of the Capcom fighters are better on the Saturn due to more memory, so they usually have better animation and less slowdown. So I recommend them as well.

Also on Saturn - get NiGHTS (or Nights into dreams... whichever title you prefer)

M.U.S.H.A. for the Genesis is one of the best 2d shooters ever made. Shining Force, Sonic the Hedgehog 1-3+Sonic and Knuckles, Contra: Hard Corps,... god, I should just make a huge list one of these days.

So here's to you Mrs. Robinson. People love you more- oh, nevermind. |

Despite the abysmal battery life, I would recommend the Game Gear. It actually has quite a few good games, plus you can always get those rechargeable AA batteries, which probably (though I'm not entirely sure) last longer than regular AA batteries.
Edit: Oh, and it's always good to take Sonic on the road or on the plane. That's another reason I recommend the Game Gear, though you could just get a Sega Nomad.

Wasn't this topic done already? or was it solely confined to the genesis? If I were you, I'd get a Sega NOMAD. That thing kicked some Nintendo ass. Where's the portable SNES that's licensed by "N"? That's right, nowhere.

Well, GBA was originally advertised as being a portable SNES.
Except, you know, without two buttons.
