The game that I hated having most of all in my NES collection as a kid was Mystery Quest. If you wanna check it out its on the Virtual NES website to play and see how bad it is.

The reason I hated having this game so much is because when I was 7 years old I practically had to beg my dad to get me an NES game every sixth months. He would always use 'why don't you just rent the games" type excuse. Everyone knows that isnt the same, you can't enjoy the game longterm like you can when you actually own it.

Anyways I remember my dad forking over like 54 dollars on this piece of crap and I tried my absolute best to enjoy it but never could. This game still anger me to this day.

I was wanting some people to test it out and see if it really is a sucky ass game in general because their are some people who have fond memories of it. If Syd or McCracken could review it and put it on some kind of list that would really make me happy to know that this game wont go down in obsecurity and be reconized as the shit it really is.

I plan to review it eventually. I rented it back in the day, and I totally beat it. I had trouble at first, then I figured out some key gameplay aspect - I forget what, if I played the game again I could tell you - and it became significantly easier. I fucking HATED those spring blocks though.

The game was definitely mediocre, but it was a fun rental. I would argue that renting games was a good idea, because it allowed you to play the field, and getting stuck with a bad rental was nowhere near as frustrating as owning a bad game. And a bad game wasn't always a bad rental. Unless the game was damn near unplayable, you didn't care that it was bad; all you cared about was beating it before it had to go back to the store, so you could trade war stories on the playground.

the box art is what caused me to purchase it,because at age 7 it looked damn fun like a hybrid of link/mario type game.It just disapointed me on so many levels I can't imagine to tell you.

Here in Tennessee we would always have a much shittier choice at the game store compared to those who lived in New England or the West Coast. I remember some stores would carry like 20 or 30 games and they were usually the big mainstream ones like Ghostbusters,Karate Kid or Back to the Future. There were no Journey to Silius or Startropic type games on display ever if I can remember.

I think my second choice was Super Mario 2, but I had already played it and was wanting something fresh I guess. I wish I just would have gotten SMB2.

You right about renting though, I started doing that alot when I had my SNES and Genesis and got to go to a better video store. It helped me greatly to know at least if the game was good or not.

I really wanted to go to blockbuster and rent games but my dad was so paranoid about them because they use to require your credit card information and my dad refused to do that. He eventually settled on Hollywood Video once I got my playstation, and thank god he did

it'll have to wait, unfortunately. I want to get two articles out before October, then I'm switching to Halloween mode.

I remember really enjoying this game when Syd and I rented it. In fact, we rented it at least twice

I always had a bad habit of doing blind game purchases. For whatever reason, either renting the game and trying it out first was too much for me, or the place I went didn't rent the game. But I usually had pretty good luck. Some of the games I bought that I had never played before were Karnov, Metroid, Final Fantasy, Deja Vu and Uninvited (though I had played/owned Shadowgate already), Maniac Mansion, Duck Tales, and I know there were some more. I had around fifty games or so when I was a kid, so I know a big chunk of them I hadn't played before.

Final Fantasy was the best because I bought it before it had really caught on. So it wasn't like I had any expectations for it because the name Final Fantasy didn't mean anything to me yet. Also, the only experience I had with RPGs at that time was Dragon Warrior.

The hidden gem would have been Maniac Mansion. It is one of my favorite games ever for the NES. I think I may be solely responsible for its popularity in my town. I had bought it out of town and they didn't have it where I live. At first, they didn't have it to rent either. So the only place a lot of people played it first was at my house.

I guess I just had good luck with making blind purchases. I can't really recall anything off the top of my head that I got and didn't like.

A lot of my NES games were bought for me without my input and with the exception of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde, almost none of them sucked. The only game I remember buying blind was Journey to Silius, which I picked out of the video game case at Child World as a reward for getting good grades all year. I picked it cuz i liked the neon orange font on the box, but luckily it was fucking awesome.

The local independent Rental place when I was a kid had a deal on 3 day holiday weekends, that you could rent 3 and get 2 free, and instead of having them for 2 days, you got them for 4. All for the price of 2 dollars a rental, or less if the game was really damn old.

I used to rent games all the time. Every Friday after school was over. I think it was $4 or $5 for a 2 day rental at a place called Movie World. I really honed and practiced my skills back then Smile I looked forward to it. I used it to scout games I wanted to eventually own and see what else was out there. I had a subscription to Nintendo Power so Iwas pretty up to date.

As for blind purchases. Double Dragon III. I read a decent review and it had just come out that DAY. You can probably research to find out what that day was because I don't remember. Maybe that's why I was pretty good at it during the NES Challenge Very Happy I think I was too young realize JUST how much it sucked compared to Double Dragon 2 or 1, but I kept plugging at it.

I got my subscription when they were giving away free copies of Dragon Warrior. This is, in my opinion, the best promotional give away ever.

I got a free Zelda anthology through NP. That was pretty sweet. Both NES games and both N64 games.

Ah, rentals...I discovered so many franchises through it. Mega Man 2, Contra III, F-Zero, Star Fox. Shit rentals are probably how I had judgement over Final Fantasy VI too. Took one look at the cat on the cover, said "fuck that shit" and moved on.

I remember my local video store had a bunch of porn on the very top shelf all away around, and I was by myself I would stare at them all slowly one by one while walking the perimeter.

If I had a shitload of money, part of it would be researching the stock of what porn videos were there, and watching every single last one of them.

Ah, bliss. Image

I had a friend how had a subscription to Nintendo power, and mooched the fuck out of him. I almost embarrassed by it.

Well the game already is a suckfest, crappy graphics (the main character looks like a gay Santa's Elf and the enemies are indecipherable pixel piles) The level layout is just lazy, instead of holes or pits there's freaking skull tiles on the floor, he can't jump for shit, it's just an annoying game. But to add vomit icing to the shit cake, that music is the most infuriatingly happy goofy gay ass music ever it sounds like teletubbies gang banging carebares on an ice cream truck driven by Rupaul.

finally someone on the forum who knows what I am talking about. The graphics look like they should be on the Atari 7800 and the game just has no fun appeal to it. The gameplay isnt fluid at all and it has nothing that is appealing. I dont see how Syd or Jeebus could rent this two times.

this review pretty much sums it up

I think it would be a good article for Syd. He is good at picking out the good points about something and the shitty aspects of it in a humerous way.

I dont wanna rush him but I think it would be a fun write for him .

Since it was bumped I'll throw some more thoughts in on Mystery Quest.

Who else got all pissed off and frustrated before they realized they could destroy certain blocks with the goofy little ping pong ball projectile weapon that the fruity little elf fired? Confused

Also, how come characters in platforming games can NEVER swim unless the whole level is water? The only platformer I ever remember addressing that stupid issue was SMB3, land and water stages and HOLY SHIT LAND STAGES WITH WATER YOU CAN SWIM IN!!! Shocked
