A lawyer by the name of Jack Thompson has been pushing anti-video game legislation, and he has also basically been accusing gamers of being one pissed off moment away from killing everyone within site. Here's an excerpt from Thompson's Wikipedia article:
"More recently, Thompson has heavily criticized a number of video games and campaigned against their producers and distributors. His basic argument is that violent video games have repeatedly been used by teenagers as “murder simulators” to rehearse violent plans. He has pointed to alleged connections between such games and a number of school massacres. According to Thompson, “In every school shooting, we find that kids who pull the trigger are video gamers.”[29] Also, he claims that scientific studies show teenagers process the game environment differently from adults, leading to increased violence and copycat behavior.[30] According to Thompson, “If some wacked-out adult wants to spend his time playing Grand Theft Auto: Vice City, one has to wonder why he doesn’t get a life, but when it comes to kids, it has a demonstrable impact on their behavior and the development of the frontal lobes of their brain.”[31] Thompson has described the proliferation of games by Sony, a Japanese company, as “Pearl Harbor 2.”[32] According to Thompson, “Many parents think that stores won’t sell an M-rated game to someone under 17. We know that’s not true, and, in fact, kids roughly 50 percent of that time, all the studies show, are able to walk into any store and get any game regardless of the rating, no questions asked.”
Thompson has rejected arguments that such video games are protected by freedom of expression, saying, “Murder simulators are not constitutionally protected speech. They’re not even speech. They’re dangerous physical appliances that teach a kid how to kill efficiently and to love it.” In addition, he has attributed part of the impetus for violent games to the military, saying that it was looking “for a way to disconnect in the soldier’s mind the physical act of pulling the trigger from the awful reality that a life may end.”[34] Thompson further claims that some of these games are based on military training and simulation technologies, such as those being developed at the Institute for Creative Technologies, which, he suggests, were created by the Department of Defense to help overcome soldiers’ inhibition to kill.[35] He also claims that the PlayStation 2's DualShock controller "gives you a pleasurable buzz back into your hands with each kill. This is operant conditioning, behavior modification right out of B.F. Skinner's laboratory."

Now me, If I hear about a kid killing everyone at a grocery store with an uzi, I think "what's wrong with him", or "where were his parents", not "what games has he been playing".

Also, check out this quote:
"Nobody shoot's anyone in the face unless your a hitman or a video gamer"
-Jack Thompson
He also said
"There are a bunch of computer geeks out there who think that the video game industry has a constitutional right to paint a bullseye on your back and on your officers' backs but that I do not have a constitutional right to point out on 60 Minutes or anywhere else that they do not have that "constitutional right."
Yeah, that's right Thompson, I'm privy to your hipocrasy. I'm privy as hell.

That is weak. Rumbling controllers have never given anyone the urge to kill.

Someone needs to point out to Mr. Thompson the difference between causation and correlation.

Jack Thompson is hilarious. He's currently trying to sue Midway because he saw a Jack Thompson Create-A-Charaacter that someone made for MK:Armageddon and he assumed that Midway had put him in the game.

I was gonna do that! I guess someone beat me to it. Yeah, after I posted that, I realized he's hilarious. You should read PennyArcade's commentary on the whole "check from Jack that wasn't really from Jack" thing.

In my opinon, video games are the very least of our childrens problems.
basically,if someone goes out and shoots someone, That person had mental and control issues to begin with. No amount of video games would have really added or subtracted to the persons initial urge to take a life (of course there could be other reasons for the murder; bullying at school, drug issues ect). Parents have been looking to blame their kids bad behaviour on things they don't understand or aren't a part of. Rock is evil, Television is corrupting our kids, video games make kids kill, whatever. They try to blame these things, because they don't want anybody questioning their parenting. they are afraid to admit that their child wasn't raised correctly, so they grasp for something to blame. anything that might have been a part of that childs life that could be the cause for him commiting crimes.
Assholes like Jack thompson. Only instead of being a parent,he is a jackass lawyer who sees a problem with america in general, and instead of looking to the corruption in government, poor policing, poverty due to a lack of jobs, illegal immigration, an unjust war, and a dim-witted president, he is grasping for a media outlet that he finds evil to blame, and that happened to be video games.
now,im not quite sure how this guy ever became a lawyer. he doesn't seem to have any knowlage of law,or country, or even that which he opposes (video games). He is a wild, eratic idiot who sends threatning emails to people and makes wild claims about how video games cause crimes. frankly, I think most people see through his bullshit, and im very glad this guy doesn't have any kind of political power,as he is surley 100X the idiot that bush is.
I've been playing video games all my life. My first ever video game (played around the age of 2) was wolfenstien 3d. i played the SHIT out of that game for about 4 years, and actually still do from time to time. I grew up playing games where the main goal is to kill as much as possible. i shot nazi forces when i was in kindergarden. Have I commited any crimes? Have I killed anybody? I still play violent video games (and also many non-violent video games) and i have no increased urge to kill or commit crimes or whatever. In fact,i could attribute video games for making me stay out of fights as a kid,as video games are a great release of stress (or sometimes an addon to stress; eg. Call of Cthulhu )
All in all, this guy has no case and he should just be ignored. if we keep giving this guy attention,he will keep trying to do stupid shit. If ignored,he will realize that we all could care less about his ridiculous case against video games, and he will fuck off (maybe.) and stay out of the public eye so we don't have to hear his bull anymore.
and now,a viewpoint from my favorite comic artist, Tim Buckly (Ctrl-Alt-Del)

I have no idea what those games you mentioned on the mantle are besides Mortal Kombat.

Thrill Kill: Mortal Kombat-esque fighting game with loads more gore. EA decided not to release it when they absorbed the company making it.
Night Trap: Game where you must moniter girls having a slumber party over security cams in order to protect them from monsters, etc. People accused it of promoting voyeurism.
San Andreas: GTA San Andreas, modded to access unused code that showed sex between your character and his girlfriends. REALLY pissed people off.
Mortal Kombat: If you're on this site for more than 5 seconds, you should know what this game is already.
