My comment the first time I saw the Disturbia trailer was: "Wow, a crappy rip-off of Rear Window."

And now Spielberg is getting sued. Serves him right, he's turned into a fucking hack. If his downward spiral continues, his final movie will be Reindeer Games 2.

Honestly, Disturbia was pretty good. I hated it on principle because whereas you called it a crappy rip-off, I called it the "sexy teen remake" of Rear Window, but it was CLEARLY the same movie.

I just assumed they had bought the rights to do the movie and that Disturbia would be the first in a wave of teenage Hitchcock remakes similar to all those Shakespeare teen movies of the 90s. If they didn't get permission to use the story that makes me wonder why it took the rights holders so long to make their claims.

Maybe they just couldn't bear watching it.

Legal issues take forever to get resolved. Most likely, they tried to settle out of court but Spielberg wouldn't give them enough money. So now it's going to court.

Movies are all rip-offs nowadays. Get off my lawn!

No, but really, I think there were enough differences that there's no way Speilberg is going to cough up any cash.

Also, the main issue here is that Rear Window was based off a short story and that the short story, NOT the movie, wasn't credited.

Amongst me and my friends we have a saying. It goes like this:

"Lets say you want to remake an Alfred Hitchcock movie. A understandable desire. But, before you begin, you should ask yourself a very important question. "Am I or would I consider myself to be as good as FUCKING Alfred Hitchcock?"

One of my friends believes that it also applies to the beatles. I don't buy.

You got that right! He hasn't made a good film in six years, and I'm willing to bet that whenever he sits in his comfortable home he thinks to himself, "Gee, people actually pay money to watch my movies in theatres these days. I'm not even gonna try anymore! It worked with Indiana Jones 4, so I'll continue making shitty blockbuster flicks. Thanks for the money, suckers!"

It all comes down to wanting to see Shia Lebouf play his nervous teen role with a broken leg or Jimmy Stewart play his same nervous adult role with a broken leg. It's the same damn thing, neither are really good movies. Rear Window wins for inventing the storyline that has been parodied multiple times, including on The Simpsons.

Jimmy Stewart is the man. Anyone seen The Philadelphia Story?

That said, I have a low tolerance for a lot of movies and Disturbia could have been worse. Shia Lebouf is (very) slowly getting less annoying.

wow, When did Spielberg start going down hill?

http://www.imdb.com/name/nm0000229/

I'd say it would be after The Terminal. It's the most recent original (read:non-remake or sequel) he made that i have seen lately and enjoyed. Plus, I know he is accustom to casting the Sam 'flavor of the year' over and over in his moves but jeeze Steve . . . Enough LaBeouf!

Munich was fantastic. You should see it. We all know how Kingdom of the Crystal Skull turned out, but I refuse to give up hope on Spielberg. He's got two science-fiction movies coming up, both of which sound exciting, and if there's one thing that can win me over it's a well-done Spielberg sci-fi movie.
