Whenver I played SF2, I would only utilitize the FIERCE punch and ROUNDHOUSE kick buttons. Whether I was combo-ing, jump kicking or throwing, I never bothered to use the weak or mid strength attacks. The only exception would be when I wanted to throw a slower-paced fireball, just to fuck with people. Other than that, I never saw any point to a low-flying dragon punch or a hurricane kick that didn't go all the way across the screen.
Did anyone else ever make significant use of those buttons? Are there better combos that can be done with the weaker attacks?

Combos? Not that I know of.
But you can actually throw the faster punches and kicks when you are in a vulnerable close spot to avoid being hit by a harder incoming attack.
As far as I can tell, all attacks have the same general DPS.
To be honest though, I tend to stick with strong attacks when playing the computer. Against another player though... quicker shots fuck with them.

I know the weaker attacks can be slightly quicker, but in a tight spot I tend to go for a throw, or use a double-hit attack (such as the one Ken+Ryu do at close range when you use ROUNDHOUSE kick.)

What GP said. I used to do only strongs myself.
But yeah it leaves me more vulnerable to get hit, especially with the horrible recovery time of moves like the Shoryuken and Guile's Somersault.

The computer is always retarded to the "weak slap and then sweep" maneuver. I only use Light and Heavy moves, unless Medium is required for a special.

Light shoryukens are nice because you can combo into them and if you get blocked they have a much safer recovery.

Just keep tapping X Y or Z with E Honda and you can clear the whole game in about a half hour.

I hate SFII for all of the annoying characters that throw fireballs. Ryu and Ken, you're the at the top of my shit list. Versus the computer, Ryu and Ken are the cheapest opponents. As for the Fierce punch/kick thing, I find myself using either Fierce punches and kicks or Quick punches and kicks. I rarely end up using the Medium attacks, occasionally I'll throw one out there, but not all that often will it happen. I was never a fan of the fireballs so fuck that. Aerial moves are a fave of mine too. Damn, now I want to play Super Street Fighter II.

Nah, man, they're easy. The real bitch is Chun Li. And don't even get me started on Sagat.

What the fuck does this mean? Seriously, is this some kind of code talk that autistic people use to describe fighting games, I don't get it.

I try to make use of all the buttons.
For dragon punch maneuvers you're rarely going to use the mid range one. The Light one is for air counters and keep aways, the strong is for combos. The reasoning for this is pretty simple. If you miss a Strong Dragon Punch you're going to be exposed and open. In mid combo the chance of that same exposure to a missed move is a lot smaller, so it's more worth the risk.
I use Jab all the time. I'm a compulsive jabber. It's quick, counters a lot of things, and works as a beginning wake-up maneuver to an opponent standing up again. It's hard to beat a character with a good jab.
For Hurricane Kick-like maneuvers the button often determines the distance. Sometimes you don't want to go all the way.
On the mid range buttons it really depends on who I'm using. Chun Li and Guile's crouching mid kick is actually really good. Guile will kick too much if you use his Strong sweep and someone will hit you eventually. Bison is also one you may want to just poke at their legs once instead of slide into them with his low Roundhouse Kick. Ryu and Ken's can be useful as a poke maneuver too.
Zangief has an awesome standing close mid Kick. Try it on someone getting up.

Sagat is cheaper than Ryu or Ken, IMO. They will at least engage you, but Sagat just hangs back throwing his Tiger fireballs until you get anxious and jump in, then he rapes you with the Tiger uppercut.

Jump in with a strong punch with Zangief. Use crouching jab to knock him out of his flying headbutt. Double lariat for flying butt attack. Spinning piledriver FTW.

After playing the game, I found I learn the attacks for the character I'm using. Some attacks are easily countered with a quick or medium punch, some characters have uppercuts for countering jump ins. I like to use Dhalsim for his stretchy arms and a good set of moves that don't involve fireballs. I never do yoga fire or flame. I don't know how to do them anyways. So, in conclusion, I use all the buttons.

That's exactly how I play SFII as well, including the part about only using the weaker buttons for varying the pace of the fireballs. I rarely lose, though I've never played a competition level player. I've been playing the game since it came out in the arcades in '91. I also own an SFII arcade machine.

I want an SF2 arcade machine!
Actually, I'd be happy with just about any arcade machine.

Is your machine SF2, Championship Edition or Turbo?
Wait.....was there actually a SFII Turbo Arcade machine, or was that just a SNES incarnation?

I have 3 machines: SFII, Ikari Warriors, and Super Punch-Out. For the SPO machine, I also have a regular Punch-Out board that I can swap in. For the Ikari Warriors machine, I have Victory Road (AKA: Ikari Warriors II), Guerrilla War, and Heavy Barrel that I can swap in (they all use the same rotary joystick + two buttons control scheme, and vertical monitors). I don't have any extra boardsets for the SFII machine yet, but there are a boatload of them that would be compatible, given that it is a JAMMA cabinet with a horizontal monitor and 6 buttons per player.
I have one other machine in the shed but it is stripped and needs to be refurbished. It is a classic Nintendo cabinet (Popeye in this case) like was used for Donkey Kong, Donkey Kong Junior, Popeye, etc. I'll get to work on it eventually, though I'm not sure if I want to keep it as Popeye or make it a DK machine.

Mine is SFII: The World Warrior, which was the original version. Any of the other versions can easily be swapped in if you obtain the boardset.
In the US, SFII Turbo was known as "SFII': Hyper Fighting" in the arcade. It was known as "SFII' Turbo: Hyper Fighting" in Japan.

I almost always use strong attacks, but sometimes I switch it up with weak attacks because using strong attacks the whole time becomes predictable and weak attacks are annoying. I rarely use medium attacks, though, unless I'm using Guile or Dhalsim.

This. Also the SF's where RYU has the downward medium punch and ken has the downward medium kick are useful. Oh, and shorter roundhouse can be useful if you want to fall short of your opponent and hit them with a sweep or something.

I forgot to add something. Ken and Ryu's standing forward kick is one of the best air counters in the game. It's a real pain to try and beat through since it usually has priority, no matter what you do. It's as annoying as being beat by Dan when all he's using is Jabs.

I am definately of the school of using only Fierce or Weak, and abandoning all Medium hits except when need to perform a specific special move. Nothing like tapping a quick, weak hit to throw someone off and then smashing them with a fierce Shoryuken or Flash Kick. Always good stuff, I need to get SFIV.
