More that should have been on the list:

King's Quest - (Pioneer of the graphical, post zork, adventure games.)
Wing Commander 3 - (First game to be made on a huge budget with high production costs, and a professional cast of actors for the cutscenes.)
Microsoft Flight Simulator - (The pioneet of Flight Sim games, which were huge in the 90s, until people lost their attention spans, and all the flight games turned to crappy arcade shooters.)

I'm really glad Myst and Deus Ex made the list.

Actually, I'm glad Myst made the list, too. It was really good for its time and I enjoyed the cutscenes. Very Happy

There will be massive fallout from the lack of Fallout.

That's right, I went there.

Damn. I had grown out Sirrus 's facial hair to make a series of YouTube vids called: Sirrus's Dating Tips. They all would've been done in that red book static. Alas, they never came together... then I was stuck with the hair which grew rampant and annoying.

"Myst" and "Riven" are damn awesome. I can stand by "Exile" only because Chucky's in it, but after that... the series went down hill. I think the Miller brothers only intended it to be two games anyway and accompanying book series. After it left their hands... well... Crying

I miss the sense of realistic exploration they created. Other point and click games just aren't as cool.

I got to number 4 and then exited the window. Honestly we should get Greenpeace involved to stop Gamepro for wasting paper.

Come see the water break my fall
No one knows no one comes
Have you ever seen the book
The one on my help
The one entitled self-death, self-death
How to earn a million pounds
I can see it now oh the hearse

For better or for worse, I kind of agree with you. After all, it was the kind of title that played a role in the most infamous crash in video game history and shifted the video game industry from the United States to Japan.

That's not entirely true. Japan was already playing a major role in the video game market prior to the '83 crash. It was Taito's Space Invaders that truly started the arcade gaming craze and Namco's Pac-Man was the first game to attract a significant number of regular female users.

I think something that is often not thought about is how the 83 crash didn't happen overnight, and a lot of factors appeared in 1981 or 1982 that not only affected the crach of 83 but helped shift gears, for better or worse, into what gaming would become in the late 80's and after.

Perhaps the single most important factor in the '83 video game crash was Atari's lawsuit against Activision and Activision's countersuit.

Scenario: Disgruntled programmers, upset by their lack of royalties on video games and lack of recognition, leave Atari and form Activision and begin developing games for the Atari 2600. Atari sued, claiming that Atari itself had sole rights to produce games for its console, Activision countersued and won, establishing the legality of third party software. And then the floodgates opened. Hundreds, if not thousands, of games were produced for the 2600 and the lack of quality control sent the video game industry into a downward spiral.

When the industry crashed, Nintendo was there to pick up the pieces. To avoid a second crash, they made their hardware proprietary, a business strategy that would be copied by nearly every console to follow. That way, companies needed authorization from Nintendo to release games on the NES. This allowed Nintendo to limit the number of games that came out on the console and prevent market oversaturation.

Oh yeah. That is true. Thanks for mentioning that, Sydlexia.

Although, I meant to say that E.T. helped shift the video game industry from the U.S. to Japan because it was a contribution to the Atari 2600's list of craptacular titles. Also, let's not forget Atari's own version of Pac-Man.

Haha, I used to love Atari Pac-Man. And the game, despite being a weak port, was about as good as you could do on the 2600, and it sold VERY well. Problem was, Atari pressed 12 million copies of the game when there were only 10 million 2600s in homes. They expected it to sell the system, and it didn't.

The funny thing is, I also used to love that game too. It was one of the first games I ever played on my dad's Atari 2600 when I was a really little kid. What's even sadder is that it was probably the game that got me hooked into video games. Good thing I also got into better titles.

I didn't exactly say that E.T. was bad. I never even played it.

What I was saying is that its humongous commercial failure really helped contribute to the failure of the American video game market and helped cause the shift of the video game production market from the United States to Japan.

Not all of them were bad choices, although I never would've picked Enter The Matrix to be in that list.

To be fair, I don't think ET was quite the worst game of all time. Maybe when you consider it's lofty expectations it was, but in a straight-up comparison I don't think it deserves quite as much shit as it gets.
