I never finished the game, and thought it was merely average.
Final Fantasy VII is great in a way though, Barret is a badass. I saw this amazing Barret Lego made out of stock parts once. The music is also good, but that's every FF game pretty much.
I can't fucking stand Sephiroth though. FUCK. THAT. ASSHOLE.

Now I regret all the time I wasted leveling up my guys in order to take on the freaking WEAPONs.
Seriously, 1 and a half year wasted. ONE AND A HALF YEAR.
Over-rated? Yes. It's still a fairly solid game, at least for me.
Final Fantasy III is also a cult-favorite and over-rated as well. Nobody bashes it for being like this, too. I can see why, but still...

Is it the great RPG ever? No. Not by a longshot.
But, when it was released in 1997, it was unlike anything else. It was an epic game to behold. The graphics were incredible for the time. The story was very deep. And, there was a lot of extras in the game. (Chocobo Breeding, Secret Summons, etc.) It was the game you showed off to everyone else when showing your Playstation.
For alot of you, FFVII was one of the 1st RPGs you ever played. And, everything that's come out since then, blows it away. For older generations, FFVII was a huge stride in RPGs, and changed the way they were made. It will be always considered a great game, more because of the impact then for the game itself.
So, can we just drop it?

Well said. Somewhere along the line it became the hip thing to do to bash something that is widely considered to be popular. (Kind of like how people claim Mac's are better than PC's, when for 99% of the population there is probably no discernible difference.)
Everyone is entitled to his opinion, but enough with the pretentious bullshit. If you don't like the game fine, but to say it sucks is like saying Led Zepplin sucks because you like the Beatles & The Rolling Stones better.

Also, the reason Final Fantasy 7 sucks is because it had its focus on childish, emotional bullshit. The entire story is selfish garbage, revolving around a bunch of uninteresting anime stereotypes with idiotic hair and fighting styles.
The real reason I think FF7 sucks? I was too busy playing real games on my PC to give a shit about inferior consoles. Quake 1 and Fallout alone were enough to destroy any possible game from the 1996-onward console years, and that still holds true to this day.

I played FF7 on the PC. It came in a cardboard folded sleeve.

I'm disagree with you, but I don't want to get into a computer Vs. console debate. Mainly because as a person who doesn't like FPS/RTS/puzzle games you play at work, so the modern computer library holds as much appeal to me as Harlequin romance novels or truck balls.
But I would like to throw Planescape:Torment out there that has such an interesting story that meteors and evil corporations draining life energy environmentalism seems bland in comparision. The world is like nothing you've ever seen before(if you didn't play planescape already), the characters were interesting and you could actually interact with them, and the motivation isn't a ubermench whining about life, which is really interesting if your a teenager and not so much later. Kinda like Ayn Rand.
Mechanics were still second ed though, so there is that.
