I never owned an X-Box and I'm ignorant of many PC games. I just found out about the game series "The Longest Journey". The review of its sequel "Dreamfall" on GameTrailers ended with: "Anyone looking for a deep story and rich characters will want to eat this game up". I'm all into adventure games, so this is looking mighty tempting. Looks like there's a Game of the Year edition for the PC with both games.

Anyone have any thoughts about the series?

Yeah I remember that game. It is pretty spiffy. One of the last really good point and clicks before survivor horror completely took it's place. Might be too slow paced for some and it takes a while before the story really gets going.

Hey there,

The Longest Journey is a 3rd person point-n-click adventure game, where the real focus was on character interaction rather than puzzle solving. So for example, if you look at Myst or Riven where the puzzles are really tough sometimes, and the atmosphere really draws you in, The Longest Journey differs in the sense that character interaction is the real way of progressing. There are enough Myst-like puzzles, but none are too daunting that you'll be racking your brains for hours.

The setting is also great, kind of like something out of a post-cyberpunk thing, like The Fifth Element. The protagonist, April Ryan, is someone you get drawn to pretty quickly after progressing through the game, and the characters are all wonderfully written and voiced, very "real" and believable. It's a great game.

But... stay away from Dreamfall. It kind of muddles the storyline, introduces some ridiculous new characters, and brings in a terrible, wonky combat system that has no place in story/character-driven adventure games. I'd advise only picking it up if you desperately want to find out what happens after The Longest Journey's really ambiguous ending.
