Yeah, kinda like that wedding songs thread, but more morbid. You know why? Because death is METAL!!!!!!!!!!

Anyway, I don't know. I've used to have a list of songs I'd want played when I go, but I've lost it. All I say strongly, is no "Tears in Heaven". It's overplayed as fuck; not only in the funeral circuit, but in the classic/soft rock radio circuits, too. Yeah, I'm not going down to some trash that bids farewell to like, every second person who dies. And also, no "Stairway to Heaven". That just seems stupidly obvious.

As to what song I would have played...

I'd love good ol' "Little Wing" wishing me off, but on a more personal note, I'm requesting Mother Love Bone's "Chloe Dancer/Crown of Thorns", that's always been a favorite of mine and seems it would fit. I'd also like Wolf Parade's "Dear Sons and Daughters of Hungry Ghosts" played last. That's my favorite song of all time, and it summarizes me fairly well. I want that to be my farewell to the earth, absolutely.++

And as tempting as it is, I don't think I'd have them play that "You Are Dead" song, though The Beatles' "I'm Only Sleeping" is tough to turn down also.

<Drew_Linky> Well, I've eaten vegetables all of once in my life.

To begin the funeral service, Metallica's "Orion." Then, at some point in the middle of the service, Thin Lizzy's "Cowboy Song", and for the end of the service, Meat Loaf's "Bat Out of Hell." My funeral has to rock, dagnabbit!

You sir, are a winner.

I was listening to Echoes, and in the keyboard section after the dolphin solo, my ex-roommate goes "This sounds like a 70's Funeral March."

I would totally be down with Free Bird, or Tuesday's Gone. That track's grown on me in recent days. Or even better, "Simple Man." I'm sure Ross will agree with me.
Just checked out that Gaslight Anthem track, not bad, not bad at all. I'm also completely ashamed that I forgot to include the Dropkick Murphys' version of "Amazing Grace." That has to be included. Metallica's "Fade to Black" would be good too, even if it's essentially a suicide note.

Fucking win. Although I would use a version by a slightly lesser known opera singer, a tenor named Richard Leech. It may be blasphemy, but imho his voice > Pavarotti, especially for Nessun Dorma. Its a beautiful and fitting song any way you look at it though.

I honestly wouldn't object to Aeris's Theme being played at my funeral, especially a nice orchestrated version. Its uplifting and melancholy at the same time and would really work. I'd love to have "Rocky Mountain High" played too. Its my favorite song and also fits pretty well.

I'd insist on a Maiden song of some kind as well. I can't think of the right one off the top of my head, but it'll come eventually. Also, I want something--anything--on bagpipes. Because bagpipes are awesome.

Depending on the nature of your death, "Hallowed Be Thy Name" could work. Razz

Laughing I considered throwing that out as a joke, actually lol, but I don't think Mom would approve.

My first choice would be "For Martha" by Smashing Pumpkins. It's supposed to be for Billy Corgan's deceased mother, but it's the perfect funeral song, and I couldn't pass it up.

Other contenders:
"Dreams" by the Cranberries (simply because it's my favorite song)
"The Ghost of You Lingers" by Spoon (hey, why not?)
"Walking With a Ghost" by Tegan and Sara (see above)
"Insight" by Joy Division (...on second thought, this wouldn't exactly be the most comforting song to play at my funeral)
"Goodnight, Travel Well" by the Killers

Gone Away by The Offspring, because they're my favorite band.
Unsung by Helmet

And probably close with Hero Of The Day by Metallica. I love that song so much.

Definitely 'Freebird' or 'Simple Man', definitely. And if I could, I'd do what we did at my grandma's funeral and have a bagpiper do 'Amazing Grace'. Hopefully I'll have a song of my own to be played when I croak too.

Oh and 'Surprise! You're Dead!' of course.

This is a toughy. I do have a few though:

Leonard Cohen - Closing Time
NOFX - Dinosaurs Will Die
The Pixies - Monkey Gone to Heaven
Violent Femmes - Country Death Song
Depeche Mode - Enjoy the Silence
Social Distortion - Ball and Chain
Bad Religion - Better Off Dead

Probably in that order.

Muzzle by the Smashing Pumpkins is the perfect funeral song in my opinion:

I fear that I am ordinary, just like everyone,
to lie here and die among the sorrows,
adrift among the days,
for everything I ever said,
and everything I've ever done is gone and dead.

As all things must surely have to end,
and great loves will one day have to part,
I know that I am meant for this world.

My life has been extraordinary,
blessed and cursed and won.
Time heals but I'm forever broken.
By and by the way...
Have you ever heard the words
I'm singing in these songs?
It's for the girl I've loved all along.
Can a taste of love be so wrong?

As all things must surely have to end,
and great loves will one day have to part,
I know that I am meant for this world.

And in my mind as I was floating,
far above the clouds,
some children laughed I'd fall for certain,
for thinking that I'd live forever.

But I knew exactly where I was.
And I knew the meaning of it all.
And I knew the the distance to the sun.
And I knew the echo that is love.
And I knew the secrets in your spires.
And I knew the emptiness of youth.
And I knew the solitude of heart.
And I knew the murmurs of the soul.

And the world is drawn into your hands.
And the world is etched upon your heart.
And the world is so hard to understand.
And the world you can't live without.

And I knew the silence of the world.

That's a good one, Syd. I think to mine I would add:

"The Band - Long Black Veil" to be played as people leave my funeral service.

"Randy Travis - Diggin' Up Bones" to be played as my casket is lowered into the ground.

I'm pretty sure I'm going to have a song and dance routine from the TV series Fame!

FAME
I'm gonna live forever
I'm gonna learn how to fly--high!

I feel it comin' together
People will see me and cry. Fame!
I'm gonna make it to heaven
Light up the sky like a flame. Fame!
I'm gonna live forever
Baby, remember my name
Remember, remember, remember, remember,
Remember, remember, remember, remember.

It's going to be very over the top and very gay. I also have a running bet with my best friend that when the first one dies, the other person has to accidentally knock over the coffin at the wake so the body partially falls out.

I'm glad other people think about this stuff too.

No, I don't think I will fuck Stummies.

The Guns N' Roses cover of Todd Rundgren's "Dust in the Wind", which is NOT the same as the Kansas song. Also, the Guns N' Roses cover of Black Sabbath's "It's Alright".

Also: Megadeth - A Tout Le Monde

Here's the song, now that I'm away from my work firewall:

Actually going to a funeral tomorrow for my great uncle, so this is very apropos.

I would love to hear that song sung by a full choir, or even just a cantor at a service.

Something acoustic by Alice in Chains. Most likely Heaven Beside you.

Then something metal as fuck. Something Megadeth I would naturally say.
