It would have been around 1990ish.

There was a toy line that was two armies at war. They were little diecast metal tanks and jets and choppers and such. You could buy them in packs of like 3, where you would get like two smaller tanks and one bigger, beefier version of the other tanks. I remember there were hover jets that looked liked the ORCAs from Command and Conquer, also there were tanks that had twin cannons.

Anybody have any ideas?

Hell Yeah!

That's it!

Thank you. Now I need to track them all down again. I only had a few of them as a kid, and none of the giant toys, but now that I am an adult with a job, I need to collect them and make an epic battlefield for them.

Yeah, I loved Mega Force. Never had many of the bigger vehicles, but I did have the Thor Hammer and that was an awesome toy. I really just loved the idea of war machines so huge they dwarf tanks, even if they are fairly impractical in nature.

Are you sure it's not Food Fighters?

Food Fighters were awesome too! Sadly, I had only the pizza guy as a kid...
