I'm not an active collector, but if I find any non-American currency at work, I take it home with me. Currently I've got:

8 Canadian quarters
1 Canadian nickel
2 Canadian dimes
12 Canadian pennies
1 Spanish peseta from 1988
1 Bahaman dime from 2005
1 Malaysian 5 sen piece from 1976
1 South African 1 rand piece from 1992
1 Mexican dime from 1996
1 20 pence (U.K.) piece from 1982
And 1 uncirculated Philiadephia stamp from the US Treasury

I was just curious about a few thing:

Do banks still sell half dollars and one dollar coins (i want to find a scacagowia for each year they are printed and maybe some suson Bs.) I'd like to also get some Ike Coins before they disipear from over collecting.

And has anyone acquired all 50 state quarters. I lost track after 2 years, I just found an Alaskan quarter in a vending machine so they must be done with them by now. Although i've heard they will be doing ones for DC and US territories:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/50_State_Quarters#District_of_Columbia_and_territories

Also i have to say the new nickel is not cool, it's like jeff is giving me a creepy look everytime i see the new design.

And ThatGuy, i'm a penny fanatic and last i looked most pennys are made of zinc with a copper plate shell around them. What year is the penny?

I found a 1904 walking liberty half dollar in my front yard using my uncle's metal detector. When I said the detector said half dollar he told me it was just a screw, but I dug anyway.

A guy I know found Nazi gold on the floor in a local mall. I'm sure it's not real gold, but it's an authentic Nazi coin.

If you started 10 years ago and collected all 50 state quarters in mint condition, their value today would be $12.50.

LOL

If you started at the bank this morning and collected 50 random quarters you would have $12.50.

You could also have 12 Sacagawea dollars and two quarters totalling $12.50

Two coins add up to 6 cents. One of them isn't a nickel. What're the 2 coins?

It's from 1943, when we needed all the copper we could get for bullets. It's completely zinc and has a dull Grey color, no copper coating.

I thought those pennies were made of steel. I have one. A magnet will pick it up. Try a magnet, if it picks up the penny it is steel. If not, well it's zinc and I'm a dumbass.

I tested it, and the magenet picks it up, but my sources which are totally not my mom tell me it's zinc with a little iron in it.

As far as i know, the pennies from 1943 are mostly steel with a thin layer of zinc to protect from corrosion. Which does jack shit by the way, thats way most steel pennies look like crap. I wonder if there are any still in circulation. I doubt it though.

Just added 2 Morgan Silver Dollars to my collection: One from 1897 and another for 1878. Any idea how much they'd be worth in fair or less quality?

The customer just plunked them down to pay for some cheetos and a powerade. I'm thinking either he stole them, was desperate, or an idiot (or possibly a combination of all three).

I'm not exactly a collector, but I do have a lot of random coins from around the world, including a FULL, not-quite-mint condition set of Dutch guilders (I lived over there for a year when I was a kid). I had assumed that once the EU switched to the Euro they would skyrocket in price and rarity, and that I could retire early...still waiting on that though.

I collect stretched pennies, does that count? I have a bunch from my last trip to the US and a bunch from Australia too.

I collect coins pretty seriously... I try to complete a whole set of a certain coin before I move onto another one, but recently I've been focusing on silver. For example, I've been getting the Silver Eagle dollars that started being minted in 1986 (I think it was.) I only buy the proof versions of those, and still in their box. They look like this:

http://www.savoncoins.com/images/1st-Year-Issue-1986-Proof-Silver-Eagle.jpg

I also collect the state quarters, but again, only in silver proof. I think so far, I own something like 35 coins, and they're worth something like $550. If I'm remembering right. I'm too lazy to drag out the collection.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

Well, I tried to collect those US quarters, but I gave up a long time ago.

On a side note, I have some Euros from my sister when I went to Spain to meet her.

In high school I put a double headed quarter into a vending machine by mistake and found out years later how freaking valuable they are. I'm pretty sure the odds I had a phony are sky high since they're so rare, but man if not..... Neutral

I used to collect when I was younger. I'm not going to go through my entire collection, but a few favorites are my Nazi pennies, my 1855 US 3 cent piece, my 1922 $1 bill in perfect shape, among many others. I also got into that State coin collecting crap as a teenager, but did it as a hobby more than "hoping" the price goes up on them, which is NEVER will in our lifetime. And that's why I originally quit collecting, I was wasting my money on buying some of these coins as an investment and most of the old coins had already gotten to their top value for the next 50 years or so, and since collecting is such a big deal nowadays, it's no longer smart to make it an investment, so unless I come across a coin or money by chance (like the '22 $1) then I don't pay for anything. Besides, the fucking mint changes their designs so much anymore...our money is absolutely ugly.

Also, one minor side note...I found a 1952 penny several years ago that isn't copper. I checked it out and it definately sounds MUCH different than a regular copper penny does, but it's also SLIGHTLY lighter than the 1943 steel pennies...it's also in great shape, yet I have no idea what it is or what it's worth...too bad it isn't one of those 1974 aluminum pennies.
