Syd,

The front page of your website has a lot of images on it.

While some of them are small, others are frigg'n huge.

That is a huge page bud.

I would be more than happy to assist you in retaining the quality of the images, but reducing the size. This would greatly reduce the bandwidth used on your site and speed it up for everyone.

Fuck it. I have the attention span of a 5 year old.

I downloaded all of the images, I adjusted them into the proper file formats, I reduced them for minimal image loss and came up with 514,000 bytes used vs 3,266,684.

The images are all uploaded to here:

That should make a HUGE impact on the speed of the site overall and improve the site's bandwidth consumption.

I have to go to the DR now about that leg thing. Lata.

I am not concerned about bandwith at this juncture. I am nowhere close to hitting my monthly threshold.

Syd,

It also includes site speed. If people are downloading served images at the same time (which happens often when you add new stories) then the entire site slows down significantly.

But look how fast they load. You know you like it.






Note, all images are resized by the browser, they are still the full images and take 100% of the loading time, which is much less than the original images do.

Average Internet Bandwidth Speeds (Megabits per Second)
Date taken from SpeedGuide.net
  • Global: 4.933
  • North America: 5.517
  • USA: 6.209

Converted to Bytes per Second
Note: When dealing with transfer speeds the term Kilo refers to 1000 when dealing with storage Kilo refers to 1024. So the math here is done as 1 megabit = 125000 bytes.
  • Global: 616,625
  • North America: 689,625
  • USA: 776,125

Size of SydLexia.com's Main Page in Bytes
  • Main Page: 2,720,783

Time to Load SydLexia.com's Main Page in Seconds
  • Global: 4.41
  • North America: 3.95
  • USA: 3.51


Not that these are the worst times ever, but it would be nice if the page loaded nearly instantly. It could if it were ~300,000 - ~600,000 bytes.

What are you talking about? If webpages HAD to take that long to load, then no one would complain. It is because they don't have to that the issue is raised.

As a web designer this is something I see and regularly work on fixing.

It may be slow to load the main page, but Syd's site is certainly safe. Studies show people will wait 8 seconds for a page to load, and his begins loading immediately, and only needs to wait for images.

I'm not one to bite the hand that feeds, not that I get fed anything, but if it could be faster...why not make it faster? Those seconds add up I bet I'm well over 5 minutes of life...gone!

I have dramatically decreased the size of the image files on the main page. I'll take care of the other index pages at some point over the next few weeks.
