I know that there are a couple of RP gamer here, so I have to ask; What do you guys think about the recent anouncement of Dungeons & Dragons 4.0 coming out next year?

I haven't played a ton of D&D, but from what I have played I certainly like 2.0 better than 3.0, so I'm naturally iffy about 4.0.

Yeah, I always preferred AD&D 2nd Edition to D&D 3rd Edition.
Of course, I no longer have the patience to play D&D anyway.
Of course, I no longer have the patients to play Doctors & Diazepam anyway.
Sorry, it just sort of popped in there.

I've been without internet for about two weeks so I haven't been able to look anything over it particularly.
I know they're raising the pre-epic level cap to 30.
Some of the classes will be getting the axe, though I'm pretty sure the archetypes (fighter, cleric, wizard, and rogue) will likely be safe. Same for the races.
All classes will have per-encounter and per-day abilities.
Prestige Classes will be getting the heave-ho, likely for a more simple grafting type ability akin to feats.
Feats and Skills will be streamlined.
Alignment won't be as prominent.
Vancian magic (the way spellcasting comes off mechanically like Crono Cross used) will be toned down.
The jump won't be as far from 3.5 to 4 as it was from 2 to 3. I'll probably just get the books in pdf to see for myself. I've heard it'll come with a virtual tabletop program for running encounters.

D&D 3.0 rules annoyed me because you could level up a random skill just by like, running through the woods getting experience for exploring. The removal of race / class restriction also was kinda lame.

The other big change, is that they are trying to incorperate digital medium with the game. So, basically, they want you to be sitting around the table playing with the pile of books, AS WELL AS, a computer sitting there.
Here's the "Teaser":
Here's the presentation:

Then wouldn't it be better to just make it a fully online MMO? Oh, wait, they already tried that with D&D Stormreach.

You don't even need books. There's probably just a CD-ROM. In a way, it kind of makes sense to do it all on a laptop.
At the same time, D&D is highly outdated. In today's world of video games, who wants to sit around and have someone tell you a story?

How many video games allow you to piss on a beggar? Impale an annoying teammate? D&D has no limitations. That's why it survives. In D&D you can shoot your hunting dog if he laughs at you for not hitting the duck.

You can also be bored to tears hearing the DM describe situations to you instead of having any sort of visual reference. And why is this in Toys & Stuff? This seems more like a Reading is Fun or Video Games thread.

Sort of like, say, a book? I believe those are still relatively popular.

Touche salesman. Still, I read constantly and am never bored by it while every single time in my life that I have ever played D&D, that has been the part that bores the hell out of me.

I don't think an official ruling was ever made, but we kinda decided at some point that board games and CCGs best fit into the Toys & Stuff category. D&D is definitely a game, and it's not a video game, so T&S is pretty much the only place to put it.

I've only played D&D once, but it was pretty OK. As long as your GM is pretty open and not an anal-retentive douche, it's pretty fun. For instance, when I was playing I used magic and a boot to shoebomb a castle.

Rule nazis are bad.
If the DM has to spend 15 minutes flipping through books, becasue you decided to do something he didn't plan on, he sucks as a DM.
If a player questions anything a DM says, using such lines as "That's not how it works, look it up in the book!" or "I can do it, because the book says I can!"
These are people you do not want to play with. The bring the funfactor level down by about a margin of 92.

I wish I could play more, but the DM we had (my friend's uncle) is now a WoW addict and never gets off the damn game. He's even neglected his friends, and there goes over half of our party. And playing D&D is pretty shitty with only 3 people.

And, you're absolutely correct. It the imagination and story telling that makes the game fun. The statistics and rules are in place to give structure and a chance to win/lose, therefore making it a "playable game."

I could stick my head up a bull's ass and write a fun text Zork adventure, but I'd rather take the butcher's word for it.
