No, silly.

Syd is obvisouly talking about the sail vessles.

The large "man-of-war" ships were used to fight in the sea battles of the American Revolutionary War. These ships of the battle line sailed nobly for centuries as the backbone of the fleets. Eventually, when iron and steam replaced wood and sail, the successor that evolved from the sailing ship of the battle line at the turn of the century came to be called the battleship.

Hey Syd, you better hope Xavier doesn't catch wind of this thread, or you'll never hear the end of it lol. Also, my name (Ross Rifle's my stage name) would be Ross the Boss if it weren't for Manowar

On serious note, I do respect the lead singer's magical metal scream abilities.

I saw this group mentioned in one of my D&D groups and they got into a discussion that included guys like Uriah Heep and Sabatum. They sound great Smile.

Oddly enough, when I first told my brother about them, I described them as "D&D metal"

Yes!!! One of the greatest lines ever!

One of the greatest bands EVER! Now, everyone into 80's Metal likes the first four; they're classics. But every album (and I do own them all) is amazing on the highest level. But Hail To England is my personal fave, followed closely by Kings of Metal and Into Glory Ride. Death to False Metal!!!

Whimps and posers, leave the hall!

He's the guy that wrote the crappy review of Castlevania in that other thread. Any essentially anonymous internet review should not begin with "For those of you who don't know, the Castlevania series has always been one of my all time favorite video game series"

And they would not be disappointed. The greatest band of all time.

When I think of D&D Metal, I think of Lake Of Tears, but that's just because they wrote a song about Raistlin Majere from Dragonlance. Razz

"Shadows, shadows and fever
No one hears him cry so he turns to evil
Only now, only now does he know

Pains, always those pains
Once he turns that way he will do it again
Only now, only now does he know
Silver doom, unseen moon will show

As they dance under the moon, they bring doom
He calls her friend and says he'll change
She calls him friend and he decieves again

Flowers, a scent of flowers
Always on his mind so he decieves her
Only now, only now does she know

Love, love makes her blind
Soon she follows him through the doors of time
Only now, only now does she know
Silver doom, unseen moon will show

As they dance under the moon, they bring doom
He calls her friend and says he'll change
She calls him friend and he decieves again "

D&D Metal makes me think of Luca Turilli, but some of his stuff is just kinda boring to me.

Here is a LEGAL link to download the song from Raistland.com, who has written permission from the band to host the mp3.

Manowar has the honor of making the most unintentionally funny metal song I've ever heard in my life;

(The hilarious, over-the-top intro is priceless also)

Link

Before discovering Manowar, I considered DragonForce the kings of cheesy, nerdy, D&D-style metal (what other band would admit to getting its inspiration from 8 bit Nintendo games and PACMAN of all fucking things), but Manowar has them beat by a mile.

I actually like that one a lot. If you want to here a really cheesy Manowar song, track down "Pleasure Slave" or "Die For Metal".

Wow. I haven't been this slack-jawed after seeing a music video since "Ridin' Dirty". The completely unintentional hilarity of that song is simply breath-taking. Manowar's frontman is one of the most out-of-touch, ridiculous singers in the history of metal music, and that's saying something.

On a related note, how funny is it that Manowar has a "feud" with Metallica?

Similarly, how impressive is it that someone like Ronnie James Dio (who I absolutely love) gets taken as seriously as he is, when some of his lyrics and concept albums (Magica?!) are even more outrageous than anything Manowar has done?

I think it's because Dio has more lyrical diversity. Manowar has certain words and phrases that they reuse over and over again. Still, they got Orson Welles to do narration for not one, but TWO of their songs and "Hail And Kill" deserves a spot on any Top 100 metal song list. That spot is probably #100, but it should be there.

I could easily name 100 Slayer or Iron Maiden songs I'd rather listen to than "Hail and Kill", but I agree it's a decent track.

Oh yeah, and we need some visuals;

If you were told that a famous metal band once starred in a gay porn film, my money would be on these guys...with Stryper a close second.

I dunno. I think Judas Priest would probably be the most likely. Or maybe Paul Stanley, that guy's got quite the lisp.
