I have a three-hour night class, and the trend at my college is that students bring laptops to their night class to entertain themselves during the boring 3-hour long lecture.

Well, our professor was going over the syllabus and brushed on the subject that, while she understands how useful they are for note-taking, she didn't want laptops in the class. Her reason was a... kind of nightmarish story from her collegue.

The collegue had a class where a handful of (male) students sat in the back row with all their laptops out. She assumed they were taking notes and didn't bother them about it, until one of the other students in the class enlightened her about what the students were really doing.

No, not checking myspace. Or playing games. Or writing emails. No, you guessed it, they were watching porn.

Besides the fact that this seems wildly inappropriate, isn't it also counter-productive? I mean, it's not like you can pleasure yourself in the middle of class, so what's the point of watching porn?

He does have a point, but I'd still save porn for out of class. I played Magic with two other guys in Art History the first time I took it though. Which led to me taking it again.

That reminds me of freshmen year when I sat down in the computer lab next to some asian kid and he closed like 500 windows real fast. I wonder what he was looking at?

Eh, watching porn is like watching anything else once you get used to it. The thrill for them was probably the ability to watch it somewhere where it was socially unacceptable.

Yeah, when i was in marching band, they had a guy with the laptop who did it in front of women. It's really lame to do that in front of people, the whole point of porn is to watch it randomly when you are sitting by yourself in your room ready to kill millions of your potential children.

I would have yelled at them for obviously lacking any moral standards and then kicked them out of the class either period or for the class and then no longer allowed laptops anymore.

I am going to be a ruthless teacher.

But, by banning laptops, why hold the whole class responsible for what a couple idiots did? That's what I don't get.

Maybe they were watching it for the plot? Wait, do porno movies even have stories anymore? Seems like a shame if they don't.

If it bothers the teachers that much, then they should put a curved mirror at the back of the classroom.

Some people break the rules. It doesn't matter how good or bad of a rule it is, it wouldn't exist if someone wasn't trying to break it.

To me, the sad thing is that the teacher's inability to handle the situation now stops others from using technology to their advantage.

Don't get me wrong, those kids watching adult movies in the back of the class are wrong. Personally I think that they should be kicked out of the class as a punishment with the ability to take it again the following semester. That sure as hell would suggest to others that class is not the place for pornography without saying technology itself is the problem.

At this time it is important to create boundaries that don't limit the potential advancements that technology can help us make. A perfect example is the iPhone. Since it is capable of just about all computer functionality (including videos)... should it be banned from the class too?

Extreme reactions aren't necessary and shouldn't be enforced, instead educators should grow with the world and figure out better ways to handle their students.

I think I already told this story, but one day at the college computers I was doing homework, when I turned my head to the left and noticed the guy next to me was looking at hentai. Raunchy Ranma 1/2 hentai. On a public not screened computer.

If your not familier with Ranma 1/2, the signature joke is the title character turns into a chick when he gets doused in either hot or cold water, and back to a dude when the opposite temperature of water hits him. That adds a quesy dimension to the mix, in case cartoon porking that would nauseate the average German wasn't enough.

WHY WOULD YOU DO THIS? THIS IS THE KIND OF THING THAT SHOULD BE EITHER NONEXISTANT OR A DEEP SHAME NOT SEEN IN PUBLIC!

Many college professors don't care about what's fair. Most of them are control freaks who think they have power over those in their classroom. Their power might be limited, but they're hesitant to accept that fact.

In other words, they're total dicks.

People are complaining about how unfair this is, but how many of you used laptops to take notes? I have NEVER seen someone with a laptop in class that was taking notes, only fucking around.

Instructors at universities don't usually have any control over the classrooms they use, unlike grade schools. In fact, they're probably only in there for as long as the class lasts.

My buddy is in Law School at night, and Has classes where either there is a total ban on laptops, and cell phones for that matter, or One class he told me about that they could have them but the Prof said that if they are abused they won't be allowed, and one kid of course went and was on messenger, I think AOL, and kept not only the speakers on, but the sounds on messenger on, needless to say no more laptops there.

I find that a lot of professors are where they are because they would never have that kind of control or power in the real world in their chosen profession, the ability to squash being questioned, and have near total authority, only if for 1-3 hours at a time, in one room, in an annoying asshole way.

My classes have started and interestinly i rarely see people with laptops in class. And i have yet to meet anyone who has confessed to watching porn in public. I have met a couple who have admited to have sex on campus . . . on the same floor as the daycare.

And i get some teachers can't put up with crap somethings and force retarded rules but for all your teacher knows, only ONE student ONE time could have been the porn freak. And i have to agree, it is very counter-productive . . . and embarrassing, especially if you watch hentia . . Shocked forget i said that Confused

Most professors are where they are because the academia IS their chosen profession. Some are dicks, sure, but so are many doctors, lawyers, engineers, computer programmers, 7-11 clerks, etc. etc.

Thou, because I am wroth, be not dismayed, for I shall win the strife, whoever circle round within for the defence. This their insolence is not new, for of old they used it at a less secret gate, which still is found without a bolt. Above it thou didst see the dead inscription; and already on this side of it
descends the steep, passing without escort through the circles,
One such that by him the city shall be opened to us.

First of all if you have a laptop, wouldn't it be of better use to look at porn outside of class? Unless you're in a porn studies class or something, you shouldn't be looking at porn in class. Secondly, if the professor doesn't want laptops, that's fine by me. If they are constant distractions in class, the prof. should have every right to ban them. Our school has a student senate, so I'm sure if there were a ban, it could be lifted through the university gov't somehow.

Which brings me to the tobacco free grounds thing, but that's off topic so I won't get into it.

I have gone to college and worked at two others. I have specifically worked with technology at these schools including classroom technology. Both schools ask for faculty input whenever they redesign or introduce technology into a class. Also this is EXACTLY what a provost is for. I know for a fact that if any faculty member asked for something, it wouldn't fall on deaf ears if it is reasonable and the deans hear about it.

That depends entirely on the college.

Said. Every single student I've seen at my university brings their laptop to class to entertain themselves, not to take notes. At all. And I know for a fact that I never took notes on my laptop when I brought it to my night class last semester. I was on AIM and MSN to entertain myself... I hardly listened to a word of the lecture. Confused
