Play everyone else in your division once. You'll have to figure out a way to randomize who goes first. In the IRC, you can use the !roll command, with higher number getting choice of color.

The top four finishers of each division will be placed into the brackets below based on their final standings.

If two players finish with equivalent records after Divisional play, the tiebreakers are as follows:

1) Player with most wins
2) Player who won head to head matchup
3) Rematch - Winner finishes higher in standings.

In the tournament, higher seed gets choice of color. If identical seeds meet, color will be randomly decided. If a match ends in a draw, then switch colors and play again. Repeat if necessary.

------------------------------------------------------------------

Hey everyone. Recently I've played a couple of IRCers in chess, and it made me think it would be fun to put together a chess competition. Everyone in there seems to be OK players, but by no means experts, so don't feel intimidated about joining. If you are a Grand Master, you may not want to join as your skills will most likely deteriorate as you are exposed to our amateurish play.

The set-up of the competition would be determined by how many people sign up. I would like to do a “regular season” of sorts where everyone plays each other once, and then I would seed a tournament based on records. The tournament would be double-elimination.

There wouldn't be a stringent schedule, so don't worry about everyone being online at the same time. You would play your opponent when you both are able to. You could arrange times either through PMs on the forum or the IRC, and then report the result of the match. I would keep track of records in this post.

The program we've used to play is on Yahoo: http://games.yahoo.com/games/login2?page=ch&ss=1

But you could use any site. Some people prefer: http://www.playok.com/en/chess/

Some hate playing online and prefer to have a physical board in front of them; it helps them plan out moves...or whatever. The simple solution to that is have one out when you go on to play, and just move the pieces to correspond to what's going on online. So don't use that as an excuse.

Let's have some fun. Please post in here if you're interested, or if you have any questions. As soon as we have a set number of participants I'll set up the competition and we'll go from there.

Sure, why not. I'm tired of beating my father all the time.

How much time would we have for each game? I'm kind of a slow player.

What do you consider "slow"?

I don't like the idea of putting a clock on it, but I also don't want people to have to set aside several hours to play a game. Maybe we can put a clock of one hour total for each player to make their moves? That's easily done in the yahoo game room.

I'll take opinions on that, though. What do people think?

That fits well in my "just wing it" game strategy Razz
Total time may be good for keeping the total game time in control, but if the game runs long, if could become a bit restricting. Maybe one minute per move would be more forgiving (Yeah, I know it wouldn't help with the total game time all that much Razz )

I'm glad to see 15 sign-ups in less than a day. That's already more interest than I expected.

I would like to ask anyone who joins to be sure they will carry out the competition to the end. Flaking out is going to fuck things up. Again, I'm not going to keep to a hard and fast schedule, but we will at least need people to make a strong effort to complete their matches in a timely manner. If people start bailing then it'll weaken the competition. So again, please think about if you're really going to be able to participate.

I hope you all do, because I think this is going to be fun. If we have a group this size, my plan for a round robin regular season goes out the window. It would take forever to have everyone play everyone else. So instead, it looks like we'll be doing this World Cup style. When we have a set number of people I'll divide everyone up into equal size groups (likely 5-6 people each). Everyone in that group will play every else. From there I'll seed the tournament.

I think it would be fun to have everyone that signs up in the final double-elimination tournament. That means the higher seeds will likely have byes. If we get a ton of sign-ups, I may have to pare it down to like 24 people in the tournament.

Also, while I'm rambling, I think I'll set the deadline to sign up as Friday, March 4th. After that I'll create schedules and let everyone know who they need to contact to play.

One minute per move is definitely too short. Many moves will only take a few seconds to make, but there are likely to be several points in the game where a person will need several minutes to make a move. That's why if we had a time restriction on the matches I'd do it as total time, not time per move.

I meant slow for an amateur, so 20 minutes is barely enough for me. An hour would be really cool though.

I like to take my time. If the game is good enough, an hour might not be enough. But it usually is. I still don't like time limits.

I'm thinking we'll pass on the time limits. If a player develops a reputation of taking hours to play, then maybe we'll have to change something.

I was thinking more along the lines of a stern warning, but that works, too. I'll leave you in charge of handling the Euros, I'll take the North Americans.
