I am not going to disagree that once in a while an extra space will cause a maximized line to break and a new line will form. This is extremely rare though, and when it does happen it is typical that one of the following lines has enough space to absorb the dropped words.
While this is certainly not a perfect test, it does show that the space added by double spacing after periods is insignificant.

You can see that the final page has the same number of lines. Also, there is no increase in the amount of ink to print because spaces are blank.
