Long Halloween and Year One. Then do Dark Knight Returns. Check out Arkham Asylum and the Killing Joke. Hush was a good one that's kind of recent.

I'm just going to repeat everyone else by saying Long Halloween, Dark Knight returns, Killing Joke and Year One. Also, not solely a Batman piece, but you should read Kingdom Come, if for nothing more than full Alex Ross art the whole way through.

Alex Ross art annoys the shit out of me. Also, killing joke is more about joker.

Killing Joke is more about the Joker, and that's why I suggest he reads it after getting some others out of the way. It's still a pivotal Batman vs Joker story. Plus Alan Moore is the shit.

Knightfall is pretty good.

Edit: Knyte reminded me I should mention that knightfall was a story arc that has now been collected into a couple volumes.

One not mentioned yet:

A Death In The Family - is good arc that was collected into a single volume.

I got The long halloween, The dark knight returns, and Arkham Asylum for Christmas, i couldnt help but read one all the way through so i read The dark knight returns, i must say it was awesome and i will be moving onto Long halloween next, Arkham Asylum has alot of abstract art and i might have to read that one a few times to understand it, so it will be last
EDIT: I finished The long halloween as well, it was preety badass im gonna try to get the sequel soon. Never saw the ending coming at all, great story.
