Hey all. I've been observing this site for a few years now yet found the forums a few months ago (I first came here through the Top 100 NES Games article and a couple other articles but didn't come to the rest of the site until much later). I thought I'd check out the forums for a few weeks first before joining.
This is one of the best forums I've ever stumbled into. Everyone seems level-headed and intelligent, no one gets nasty when someone disagrees, the mods aren't assholes, much of what people talk about here match many of my interests and Syd himself is one of the best posters I've seen. Looks like I'll have quite a bit of fun here.
One question: Would it mess up the board if I typed in blue text?

Eh, it's not as bad as dark red.
But welcome! And yes, this site does rock.

Welcome to the forums!
Blue looks fine on black, but lousy on purple.

Welcome to the party.
The blue is a pain for the visually impaired.

You're a dork GP.
And this place isn't nearly as fun as it used to be since Jeebus calmed down. I want Jeebus drama!

What the chart shows us is that basically every color is annoying against one of the black and purple backgrounds, or both...except white.

I like a few colors better than white on purple, dark blue's probably my favorite, actually. Black's much more forgiving for what looks nice on it.

Yeah but I'm talking about colors that are good on both backgrounds. Black obviously is no good. Dark blue looks fine on the purple, but not on the black.

Lol, I'm just glad I'm not getting picked on for wanting to type in a color other than white. I've been to a few forums where everybody made a huge stink over me typing in blue. I mean, it's not like I'm using seizure-inducing rainbow colors or anything, and if it's such a problem, why even have the option to do so?
Cool, that chart helps a lot. Thanks, GP :3 The problem with the default board setting is that the alternating colors make it hard to use a font color that fits well enough with both.
I think I'll go with cyan which stands out the most under both colors. Sorry if it looks awkward to some of you, it's just I can't stand seeing my own text in plain white on black. I'm just like that.

Hmmm, well, the real problem is that it sets a precedent to use different colors. Now if everyone picks a different color, it is going to not only be annoying, but look stupid. I think the color options are better used for a specific spot here and there and not for "all my posts" color choice.

The advantage to not picking a color is that the font can be changed via style sheets when the forums are upgraded... some day... It will happen, but most likely knowing Syd, white will remain the color. However, exports and printing will work more easily with the white because it is converted by the forum software... that is unless you use explicit white defined by the COLOR BBCode. In that case, it should output white instead of as plain text.
Methid, you could always write a Greasemonekyscript that alters the font color for all.

FACT: Nearly every color goes with black. In this particular case, every color except black goes with black.
The following colors displease me on the #9966FF background: Red, Brown, Green, and Olive. And of course, #9966FF doesn't go with itself.

Ach, he says he doesn't like my favorite color (green). I feel hurt.
On another note, welcome to the boards! You're in for a nasty surprise.

Just use #00ff00 when you need a green.
On that note, I don't understand why "Green" = #008000.
Based on the color wheel NAME here are the primary and secondary colors
Primary Color Red = #ff0000
Primary Color Blue = #0000ff
Primary Color Green = #008000
Secondary Color Yellow = #ffff00
Secondary Color Cyan = #00ffff
Secondary Color Magenta = #ff00ff
Oddly, they all match up name and color except for Green. The actual color not by name, but reference as a primary color is
Lime = #00ff00 |
I tell you, this is a scam! We are all being played by the evil creators of HTML.

Yeah, Lime Green, which as you've pointed out is True Green, looks fine on both colors. If it didn't, it wouldn't be part of the layout.
