Yes, it's free with the hosting. If you don't tell them that you want to renew hosting, they don't renew your domain. I am set to auto-renew, and I got billed today. The bill has been paid, as I imagine hosting services are nicer to people who pay their bills in an expedient fashion.

I am happy that the site will continue to exist 
Related story, some of my friends (who suck at paying bills) had a website for their band. They paid the first year and then for six months into the second year "forgot" to pay for it. After that it was turned off but not deleted. As soon as they paid the back debt for 6 months they were live again.
